Astro City #45

Astro City #45 comic reviewAfter a series of single-issue tales, the current run of Astro City brings back the Broken Man to continue his story. Interrupted previously in telling us his tale, this time the strange figure begins by telling us of a hero known as Glamorax. Connected to the history of heroes and villains the Broken Man has already shared with us, this issue introduces us to the strange hero, and introduces Glamorax to the past lives tied to the character.

Infamous Iron Man #9

Infamous Iron Man #9 comic reviewFollowing Doom‘s bizarre vision, the former super-villain turned would-be hero is arrested by S.H.I.E.L.D. If that wasn’t enough, a few agents decide it’s better that the tranquilized prisoner never wake up at all.

One of the strengths about the comic so far is the shift in dichotomy of its characters. Marvel’s most-recognized super-villain is a hero and S.H.I.E.L.D. is actively attempting to stop him from doing good (and even attempting to kill him now and again). The arrival of Doom’s mother, whose true intentions are still unclear, certainly complicates matters even further. What is she really after?

Batman #25

Batman #25 comic reviewBatman #25 offers very little of the Batman, and only one unspoken cameo for his new bride-to-be. Instead the issue sets up events for the comic’s next big arc. While the Joker passes time shooting comedians who fail to make him laugh, the Riddler finds a way to bring his incarceration to an end by threatening the lives of the prison guards’ children. With two of Batman’s most notorious enemies at large it doesn’t take long for the pair to cross paths. When the Riddler’s suggestion of a team-up for the pair is rebuffed by the noisy end of a gun it proves to be the first shot fired in “The War of Jokes and Riddles.”

The Wild Storm #5

The Wild Storm #5 comic reviewWith The Wild Storm #5, writer Warren Ellis continues to build out the new universe by re-introducing old characters. The fifth issue gives us Zealot, who like everyone else is searching for Angela Spica but instead runs into an old enemy, a disconnected cameo by Voodoo, and the IO’s premier assassin Michael Cray whose employers want him to do one more job before he succumbs to what is slowly killing him – find Angela. However, even after a brief examination of the facts he can already tell the woman is far more interesting, and far less of a threat, than she seems.

Behind both storylines are larger ideas just barely touched on here. Given the amount of characters Ellis apparently wants to bring back in the new series I’m beginning to wonder how long before things get a bit unwieldy?

Josie and the Pussycats #7

Josie and the Pussycats #7Josie and the Pussycats #7 is a fun single issue story in which Josie, Melody, and Val begin to see the fruits of their recent success and make an important decision about what kind of band they want to be going forward. After their performance the band has to decide whether or not to stick around and possibly claim their award or skip out early and perform at a local charity concert for a good cause (leaving their manager to make an uncomfortable acceptance speech). Was their any doubt what the girls would choose?

Focused more on the threesome than some outside threat, there’s still a bit of shenanigans here when the Pussycats discover their competition literally stuffing the ballot box in order to beat their rivals. This gives the issue a bit of action, but it’s primarily focused on continuing to build on the friendship between the Pussycats as their star begins to rise.
