Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #26

Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #26 comic reviewWhen the city is attacked by kung fu dragons Mystery, Inc. calls in some help to deal with the situation. Who do you call when kung fu dragons attack? Hong Kong Phooey, of course.

The latest Hanna-Barbara character to show-up in the pages of Scooby-Doo! Team-Up proves to be more successful than some of the others. The comic has fun with the sheer ridiculousness of the character, a talking canine master of kung fu who never actually hits anything while still falling into the classic Scooby-Doo trope of a reasonable explanation for the bizarre circumstances the Scooby Gang stumbles into.

The Visitor: How and Why He Stayed #4

The Visitor: How and Why He Stayed #4 comic reviewThe penultimate issue of Dark Horse’s five-issue mini-series offers a further look into the life of the mysterious Visitor. Set decades after the first issue, Hellboy has grown into the hero that the alien always hoped he could be. However, he and the B.P.R.D. still need his unseen help from time to time with anonymous tips and even taking down a cult leader when needed.

Much of The Visitor: How and Why He Stayed #4 focuses on the Visitor’s life away from Hellboy and the life he made with his wife Ruby. Although the issue is a celebration of the pair’s life together, in spite of what society of the times thought of them, there is melancholy feel in this issue as Ruby’s memory slips.

Rick and Morty (Free Comic Book Day 2017)

Rick and Morty (Free Comic Book Day 2017) comic review2017’s Rick and Morty Free Comic Book Day issue reprints the opening issue of Oni Press’ ongoing Rick and Morty comic. In Part One of the Wubba Lubba Dub Dub of Wall Street, Rick overreacts to Jerry‘s suggestion that Morty should get a part-time job. After signing up Morty in the stock market, Rick uses a device to tell the future to make business blissfully good for the pair. Of course, there are a couple of problems.

First, Jerry doesn’t react well the billions the two pull in. Second, a time-cop known as Professor Tock (a fun take on a couple classic Doctors from Doctor Who) takes interest in the pair, knowing that Rick has already repeatedly violated the laws of time. And third, the truth about how Rick’s device actually works leaves Morty horrified.

Angel Season Eleven #5

Angel Season Eleven #5 comic reviewSent by Illyria through time into the vampire’s past, Angel and Fred find themselves on a ship bound for the new world where its crew is being picked off by Angelus and Darla. As with the first opening arc, this isn’t a walk down memory lane where Fred and Angel are observers to events, instead the pair are active in the timestream and able to make changes to the past.

While Angel is able to avoid being seeing by either Darla or his less soul-filled self, Fred isn’t so lucky. Seeking out the rumored magical item on the ship, Fred is able to find it but both vampires also find her. So how does Angel save his friend without directly confronting himself and possibly making large changes to the timeline (as you’d think Darla and Angelus would remembering running into an Angel with a soul)?

Detective Comics #957

Detective Comics #957 comic reviewWith the extended arc surrounding the invasion of Gotham first by an army of Batmen an then by the League of Shadows, Detective Comics has let the actions of Spoiler fall through the cracks. Detective Comics #957 picks up this thread to let us in on what Stephanie Brown has been up to since the apparent death of Tim Drake.

Obviously still in mourning, the vigilante has come up with a plan to focus attention away from Batman and the Bat-Family by solving crimes and giving the GCPD all the credit. It’s an odd plan, but fits in with her role of “spoiler” I guess. It also gives her an outlet to use her pain for good rather than misguidedly taking on or harming any member of the Bat-Family directly. Of course there is glaring error in her plan: mostly Batman doesn’t take credit for what he does, meaning her actions might not amount to what she hopes. Also the lure of Batman, and the fear he causes the lesser-criminals of Gotham City, isn’t to be ignored.
