Wonder Woman #16 comic reviewWhile Wonder Woman appears in this issue, primarily while being shown in news footage or while discussed by other characters, the primary focus of the issue is on the secret organization known as Godwatch. The issue reintroduces us to powerful businesswoman Veronica Cale with a resentment towards Wonder Woman given the Amazon’s ease at finding acceptance and acknowledgement in a patriarchal world.

Godwatch isn’t the only people interested in Diana as twin gods Deimos and Phobos steal the soul of Veronica’s daughter to force the CEO to use her untested technology to help the pair find the location of Themyscira, which they believe is buried somewhere in Wonder Woman’s unconscious mind. When the attempt fails, Veronica is left with even more hate for all gods walking the Earth, including Wonder Woman.

Green Arrow #16

Green Arrow #16 comic reviewGreen Arrow #16 begins with a happy reunion but ends in tragedy. The return of Emiko Queen certainly lightens Oliver’s recent hardships which include being hunted by the Seattle Police, having Oliver Queen thought dead, and living in the forest as a modern day outlaw.

Working with Chief Westberg, Ollie, Emi, Black Canary, and Diggle take down the dangerous rogue cops known as the Vice Squad. It’s a big win for Green Arrow, both in cleaning up the streets and repairing his tarnished reputation, but before the night is even over celebration will turn to tragedy with the return of the Dark Archer Malcolm Merlyn.

Will Eisner's The Spirit: The Corpse-Makers #1 comic reviewThe first issue of the new five-issue mini-series written and drawn by Francesco Francavilla starts with the hit-and-run of a 58 year-old man. Neither the Spirit nor the police see anything suspicious about the crime, but then why do an odd group of men show up in the morgue to collect the body?

Will Eisner’s The Spirit: The Corpse-Makers #1 also introduces us to Ebony White‘s cousin Jim, a man with a troubled past which is done with him just yet. Recently released from prison, Jim is pulled into a robbery of the Central Bank by some old associates who use Ebony’s well being as leverage. Poor Jim may get away from the criminals and the police but will run into the same strange men from the morgue likely ending tragedy for Ebony’s cousin.

Darth Maul #1

Darth Maul #1 comic reviewGiven the success of the (sadly completed) Darth Vader series, it should come to know surprise that Marvel launches another title centered around a Sith Lord. Set prior to the events of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menance, Darth Maul centers around Darth Sidious‘ apprentice.

While I’m not wild about the art of Luke Ross in this first issue, the action is fast-paced and certainly shows off Maul’s prowess. As in the film, the character doesn’t speak much, but here we are given narration to let us know what’s going on in Maul’s pointy head. Impatience is the main theme of the first issue as Darth Maul struggles to deal with his anger and hate for the Jedi but still obey his master and wait until the proper time to strike and make their existence known.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eleven #3

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eleven #3 comic reviewI’m not sure if Joss Whedon and his comic team anticipated a Trump presidency when laying out the events for the Eleventh Season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or not, but it’s certainly timely. As the government begins making good on their threats, demons and witches are rounded up to relocation camps. Much of the issue deals with the team’s various attempts to protect its younger members, but when the shit hits the fan and a Slayer arrives to forcibly remove Willow and Spike things get real.

Willing to fight to protect her family and friends, Buffy is talked down from starting a revolution by Willow. Choosing to go with her best friend and Spike, Buffy says farewell to the rest of the Scoobies and begins a new journey.
