Astro City #38

Astro City #38A companion piece to Astro City #37, the latest issue of Astro City remains in the Roaring Twenties. The musical theme remains as well, but while several other heroes are mentioned, the comic’s central focus is on Jazzbaby. Listening to the music of the city, Jazzbaby is able to find, and anticipate, trouble.

The main threat in Astro City #38 comes in an underground speakeasy where a villain known as Destine plans on unlocking the power of the mystical Star of Lahkimpur and opening a door to the netherworld. In his way are the equally strange serpent cult, Jazzbaby, and a host of other heroes that arrive to join the fray including the Cloak of Night and the Five Enemies.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #2While still keeping the focus on Red Hood, Red Hood and the Outlaws #2 introduces us to one of the characters who will eventually make up a third of the new team. While attempting to acquire a weapon for Black Mask, Jason Todd runs into an unexpected complication in the form of the Amazon Artemis who is also searching for a powerful weapon on the derailed train. Green Lanterns #6

Green Lanterns #6

The opening arc of the series concludes as Jessica Cruz is able to overcome her doubts and anxiety and save her partner from the Red Lanterns. Although Jessica and Simon are successful in destroying the Hell Tower and driving the Red Lanterns from Earth, things are far from settled as Atrocitus and Dex-Starr have left a gift deep within the Earth’s core which will one day create all new problems for the Green Lanterns. However, Jessica’s effect on Bleez also suggests that something has fundamentally changed for Atrocitus’ most valued lieutenant. We’ll just have to wait and see what that means for both Corps. Worth a look.

Hadrian’s Wall #1

Hadrian's Wall #1I love a good murder mystery. Unfortunately, after one issue I’m unsure if Image Comics’ new series fits the bill. Filled with more emotional baggage and drama than actual mystery, Hadrian’s Wall #1 introduces us to retired investigator Simon Moore who is brought out of retirement to investigate the mysterious death of the man who shot him, stole his wife, and ended his career.

Other than seeing the victim die in the vacuum of space, outside the long-range spaceship Hadrian’s Wall, we don’t get much more information about the victim or how someone might even go about killing someone alone in outer pace. What we do get is lots of drama between Simon and his ex (who after years of knowing him somehow doesn’t know telling him not to do something only encourages him to accept the case – that and the large payday).

Mockingbird #7

Mockingbird #7Mockingbird‘s voyage aboard a super-hero fanboy cruise to the Bermuda Triangle continues as she and Hunter become deputized to investigate the murder aboard the ship of a stranger who believed he had important information to help Hawkeye who currently stands trial for killing a defenseless Bruce Banner. One of the strengths of the series so far is the comic’s tongue-in-cheek nature. That said, Mockingbird #7 is the first issue of the series where things begin to get out of hand as Chelsea Cain is so quick with quips gags, in-panel jokes (such as what each character’s favorite cocktail is) that the actually story gets stalled for too much of this comic.
