Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #30

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #30Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten comes to a close by concluding the “Own It” story arc and having the Scoobies come together once more to stop a big bad. In the battle against D’Hoffryn our heroes find an unexpected ally as the vengeance demon discovers he may have made the new Anya a little too well. Granting her boss’ wish, Anya is able not only to satiate her own need for vengeance but also give Buffy and her pals a fighting chance.

Following the Scoobies chasing down the no-longer all-powerful D’Hoffryn, much of the issue is epilogue that resets the status quo heading into the next comic series. This includes the return of Xander, a cameo from Dracula, and the setting up of a new magic council.

Usagi Yojimbo #157

Usagi Yojimbo #157“The Secret of the Hell Screen” concludes as Miyamoto Usagi and Inspector Ishida lay a trap to capture those responsible for the pair of recent murders at the temple which houses the most bizarre piece of art Usagi has ever come across in his travels.

Although Usagi uncovers the identity of both killers, the rabbit ronin isn’t given the backstory for why a priest would go to such lengths to protect the temple and its devilish attraction. However, the reader is given a short history of the former general and his first stop at the temple which forever changed his destiny and made him the into the priest (and now killer) he is today before leading into a rain-drenched battle between all four men. The fact that his story remains undiscovered by all but the reader adds another level to his tragic tale.

Hal Jordan and The Green Lantern Corps #3

Hal Jordan and The Green Lantern Corps #3As Guy Gardner searches for information about the current state of the universe for the returned Green Lantern Corps, Hal Jordan battles and increasing number of Yellow Lanterns who Sinestro dispatches to take down his former pupil. Eventually the odds become too great likely leading to a confrontation between the pair in next month’s issue.

Heavy on action and mostly centered around Hal Jordan, the issue continues to paint the known universe under Sinestro’s rule as a dark place indeed. With Jordan captured and the other Lanterns still unaware about just what has transpired in their absence I’m curious to see if the focus of the next issue will switch more to Guy Gardner and his own solo adventuring or stick with Jordan as the main protaganist and he’s taken back to Warworld for another confrontation with his arch-enemy.

Blue Beetle: Rebirth #1

Blue Beetle: Rebirth #1Owing more than a little to Bryan Q. Miller‘s Batgirl run which put the younger hero under the tutelage of her retired predecessor, Keith Giffen offers us two Blue Beetles for the price of one. First off, I’m ecstatic to see Ted Kord back in the DCU complete with his Bug (if not his costume or partner in crime Booster Gold). Focused primarily on the adventures of Jaime Reyes as the Blue Beetle, I’m happy to see Ted carving out a new spot for himself in the background.

Scott Kolins certainly has a flair for drawing Reyes’ costume. And I appreciate the nod to Ted’s costume with his Blue Beetle t-shirt (even if I’d rather see him in costume – possibly in flashbacks?).

Batman #4

Batman #4The discovery of the bodies of 27 dead soldiers lead Batman down a dark path which will fill-in the truth about Gotham’s newest super-heroes Gotham and Gotham Girl and their origins as part of Amanda Waller‘s Suicide Squad. Solving one mystery, how Waller’s plan to help Gotham using the Psycho-Pirate and Dr. Strange backfired, leaves an entirely new problem for Batman to face: how to deal with a murderous unhinged super-being looking to stop the city he’s sworn to protect from ever hurting another one of its citizens.

As easy as it is for Batman to find Task Force X’s secret Gotham bunker it’s going to be that much harder dealing with the mess Waller has left in his lap. While Gotham Girl appears to not be a danger to anyone (at least not yet), Gotham is a loaded gun Hugo Strange has turned on the city all to facilitate his own escape.
