Black Widow #2

Black Widow #2While still leaving much to be revealed, Black Widow #2 takes us back a week before the events of the first issue which began with with Natasha Romanova being chased out of S.H.I.E.L.D. with stolen files. It’s still unclear as to just what the Black Widow stole from S.H.I.E.L.D. or what specifically from her past the Weeping Lion is blackmailing our heroine with (which may be nothing more than a MacGuffin) in order to force the Widow to betray her friends.

What is clear is that the Black Widow has been forced into a corner to do the bidding of a criminal organization who apparently knows where at least a few of her bodies are buried.

Secret Six #12

Secret Six #12With a few arcs under its belt it looks like its time for a little shake-up to the current status quo of the Secret Six. The neighborhood gets a trio of unexpected visitors in Secret Six #12. With Batgirl still hanging around from last month’s issue, Lady Shiva comes calling on the house of misfit toys. Determined to make Strix an offer the assassin can’t refuse, Shiva makes quick work of Catman, Strix, and Batgirl. Further threatening the lives of her new friends, Shiva convinces Strix to join the League of Assassins.

We also get an appearance by Sue Dinby which has a dramatic effect on her husband. Say goodbye to Big Shot and say hello to the Elongated Man. Maybe his heroic look can rub off on Catman next?

Star Wars #17

Star Wars #17After dropping Aphra off at Sunspot Prison, Leia and Stana Starros run into a bit of trouble when a madman with his own droid asassins shows up and takes over the prison determined to exact a far more brutal form of justice on the inmates.

Trapped in with prisoners, Leia and Starros are forced to make hard decisions on what they will need to do to survive and who they are willing to trust in order to do so.

The other storyline is a bit more lighthearted as Luke wrangles up some smuggling business for the Millennium Falcon after Han loses Rebellion credits while gambling. The ship’s captain is not pleased with the deal Luke makes (only half of the 10,000 credits Han expected), nor the cargo (a herd of skittish Nerfs) or how it brings Imperial TIE Fighters after them.

Astro City #33“Things Past” continues as we spend more time with the reunited former super-villains Steeljack and Cutlass. The villain turned private eye passes some time sharing a few stories of contemporaries of theirs unable to give up the life and the cost each eventually had to pay. Steeljack also takes his old friend to visit the Fix-It Man, and that’s when things go all to hell.

As to the mystery of what is happening with Cutlass, that only deepens with the second issue of the arc which leads to the death of another old friend of Steeljack’s and to a schmaltzy villain-themed restaurant franchise whose owner must hold some answers about what is going on.

Usagi Yojimbo #153

Usagi Yojimbo #153Tying into the story of the previous issue, Usagi Yojimbo #153 picks up events during the storm and shows us what became of a certain rabbit ronin while the villagers where finishing saving their homes from the flood. After witnessing one of the men killed by a Kappa, Miyamoto Usagi goes after the creature to exact some manner of justice. Instead of the bloodthirsty water spirit, our hero finds a frightened Kappa female and her young son who, along with the villagers, have been put in danger by a new wild Kappa who has come to the shores of the river.

Vowing to put an end to the matter, Usagi actually doesn’t fair well against the Kappa. If not for both the timely intervention of his new friend and her healing touch things could have turned out far worse for our hero in the caves under the earth. (This issue is a rarity in which we see Usagi lose what appears to be a fair fight, and lose it badly).
