Will Eisner’s The Spirit #6

Will Eisner's The Spirit #6The latest issue of Will Eisner’s The Spirit delves into the Spirit‘s missing two years from Central City. The first third of the comic is presented from a the point of view of a former soldier turned mercenary in the South Pacific on a small island known as Nawala Pulo where he job for two years was to be the jailer for a single prisoner. Teasing us with only glimpses of our hero, the introduction works to continue to deepen the mystery of who imprisoned the hero and why.

The remainder of the comic, other than a few panels dealing with the Dolans reacting to the hero’s return, is presented from our the Spirit’s point of view recounting his imprisonment and escape to Ebony White and Sammy Strunk. Although he knows even less about his circumstances than his former jailer, the Spirit was able to learn a name which is the only clue he has.

Rocket Raccoon and Groot #1

Rocket Raccoon and Groot #1Occasionally comic writers can get too cute for their own good. Set eight months after the events of Marvel’s Secret Wars (an event I skipped and have no plans on catching up on anytime soon), the new series launches with the rest of the Guardians believing both Rocket Raccoon and Groot are dead (although they mostly don’t appear that broken up about it).

With our heroes missing in action, Rocket Raccoon and Groot #1 delivers a Rocket and Groot story featuring two low-rent stand-ins in a surly mouse and (far less imposing) walking plant lifeform with a limited vocabulary hired by Groot to deliver himself to his old friend (who apparently has become a dictator on some far off world).

Daredevil #2

Daredevil #2In both as a vigilante and in his new role as an Assistant District Attorney, Daredevil continues to take on the new gang leader Tenfingers whose control over his followers is explained in the new series’ second issue. Suffering a loss in the courtroom when Tenfingers’ agents manage to get to the state’s star witness is nothing compared to the trouble Daredevil steps in at the end of the issue when The Hand shows up to take back the power Tenfingers stole from them.

I understand the choice in putting Daredevil in the prosecutor’s office, but I’m having a hard time accepting Matt Murdock, the champion of lost causes and the little guy, in that role. Nor am I sold on his new sidekick Blindspot whose only interesting attribute two issues in seems to be his suit’s powered invisibility.

Morning Glories #49

Morning Glories #49The day has arrived. Morning Glories #49 brings three ongoing stories to a head as the student elections, the Towerball tournament, and the Science Fair all occur in the first-half of the two-part season finale. While both Casey and Daramount assume Ike cheated to allow Casey’s unexpected win, the comic teases something else by tying Casey’s speech, her fainting spell, the Cylinder, and the election results all together in something far complicated that stuffing a ballot box.

Just as unlikely as Casey’s win, Guillaume‘s plan to do the impossible and win Towerball with the Blue Team is equally successful suggesting fallout for both parties in next month’s issue.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #22

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #22The calm before the storm. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #22 takes a step back from the ongoing battle of Buffy and the Scoobies with all manner of demons being let into this reality by the stolen “Restless Door” to focus on relationships central to the series and lay the foundation for potential problems somewhere down the line.

While initially apprehensive, Willow finds the military’s offer to help use her unique knowledge of technology and magic to keep the worlds safe appealing. Buffy on the other hand is less inclined to forget her past dealings with the military as the comic teases a split between best friends who may be starting to grow apart. While the issue makes sure to bring the two women together before the end, the disagreement that caused the fight is far from settled suggesting it may return to raise its ugly head before the end of the season.
