She-Hulk #2

She-Hulk #2Most of the second issue of the new She-Hulk title involves the basic set-up of She-Hulk setting up her new offices. She grabs office space in a building that targets super-powered tenants, hiring an assistant, and does her best to drum up new clients (which isn’t easy as her former firm has spread word about her hotheadedness destroying the partner’s conference table on her way out of the door and poisoned the well against her).

The second-half of the issue involves She-Hulk letting off some much needed steam with Hellcat first at a bar and later, against her better judgement, taking on an A.I.M. warehouse with her drunken (but determined) partner.

Although things don’t exactly go smoothly, the much-needed victory gives She-Hulk exactly what she needed as the misadventures of the lawyering super-hero continue. And by the end of the issue our heroine has her first new client: the son of Victor von Doom. Worth a look.

Fairest #24

Fairest #24Cinderella‘s search into the army of rat men leads her to reconnect with two characters from her past. The first, the simple-minded mouse turned man Marcel, it seems is responsible for the birth of the rat army but not the nefarious purposes they have been put to recently. The second, however, is an old enemy who very much wants Cindy dead (I guess what they say about evil step-sisters is true).

After surviving the attack of her step-sister, Cinderella and Marcel escape on a boat bound for home, but (as the last couple of panels illustrate) getting away from an insane step-sister turned assassin is harder than it looks.

Although we don’t get much in the way of answers (which will likely be coming in next month’s issue), the latest issue of the arc delivers a pair of action sequences between Cinderella and perhaps her oldest nemesis as the story arc reaches its penultimate issue next month before concluding in Fairest #26. Worth a look.

Nova #14

Nova #14The Nova and Beta Ray Bill team-up continues as the pair save a spaceship while making their way to Knowhere where the slavers Bill has been hunting, and Nova was tricked into helping, are holed-up. Forced to separate (and bring the team-up to a premature end), Nova discovers a new ally in the former head of security of Knowhere and forgotten Guardian of the Galaxy – Cosmo!

I’m glad to see someone remember Cosmo actually exists (unlike the telepathic canine’s former partners), but I’m a little confused as to when the Guardians of the Galaxy’s secret base inside the head of a Celestial became Mos Eisley? Also, despite his unimpressive visage, Cosmo is actually not the easiest foe to defeat so I’m hoping next issue explains how he lost control of the secret station to a group that had to trick a Nova into fixing their ship’s engine.

Despite these issues, Nova #14 is a lot of fun and I’ll take any excuse to get Cosmo back into comics (even if I’d rather be seeing him in Guardians of the Galaxy). Worth a look.

Morning Glories #37

Morning Glories #37The latest issue of Morning Glories centers around yet another of the Truants as it follows the roaming astral body of the comatose Akiko who, while talking to her comatose body, roams various moments of her past, current unfolding events around the school (and possible future?) including meeting Danielle Clarkson, her days growing up and learning in Abraham’s Camp, a ballet recital for the older Jade, and making it down to the basement to comfort the blinded Fortunato.

Given that all we see in this issue occurs during a dream state, albeit a far looser one than some that we have witnessed in the past, its unclear how much is true and how much (such as the visions the young woman sees when performing in front of an older version of Jade she seems to know but can’t possibly have met yet) is actually true and how much is simply the dream. As to the lessons learned from Akiko’s experiences, even if her dreams are more clear, the meaning behind much of what we see continues to be suggested but largely shrouded in mystery (as fans have come to expect).

Magneto #1

Magneto #1Over the years Magneto has been many things: super-villain, teacher, victim, wanderer, savior, and enemy to all human-kind. With Magneto #1 writer and artist find a new path for old warrior who has left Cyclops‘ camp and begun a journey of his own seeking out those who have harmed mutants and exacting revenge.

Far more low-key than usual, this version of the character does his best to stay off the radar of various government agencies like S.H.I.E.L.D. while performing his own kind of brutal justice. Although his power-set is still limited the character seems far more in control of his powers than we saw in Uncanny X-Men as he has no trouble in taking out an entire police station and an Omega Prime Sentinel left in the world to target those just like him.

I’ll admit I’d have preferred the character to stay with Cyclops rather than becoming the vagabond vigilante we see here. However, it’s certainly an intriguing set-up and offers a variety of stories to be told in the coming months. Worth a look.
