Scarlet Spider #8

scarlet-spider-8-coverFinding himself in the ridiculous position of trusting an obviously mentally unstable woman he saved, then slept with, then learned she created the explosion he saved her from, leads the Scarlet Spider to trespass on Roxxon property and threaten the CEO when a group of heroes show up to stop him. All-in-all, he’s had better days.

Battling the Rangers, Kaine manages to escape with the young woman who convinces him once again that her father is truly up to no good. This leads him to break into another of Roxxon facilities only to find no evidence to support the woman’s claim (cursing his decision to believe Zoe), and once again be ambushed by the now even more ticked off Rangers.

Of course that’s not the end of the story as the ensuing battle uncovers the awful truth about what Roxxon is really up to and creates an unstable new situation the Scarlet Spider and Rangers will have to work together to stop. Here’s hoping the conclusion is filled with as much action and humor as this issue. Worth a look.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Nine #12

btvs-season-nine-12-coverWorking for Kennedy‘s new Slayer bodyguard service Buffy learns that Wolram & Hart want their latest client dead, and for good reason. Hired by the company to build a digital portal into the Hell Dimension where the Senior Partners live, it’s now the only link to the Earth following Buffy destroying the Seed at the end of Season Eight.

Unwilling to take the chance that the man might try to shut it off, knowing it would be impossible to turn back on, the Senior Partners have put a hit on the programmer. Despite the loss in money and prestige, he knows the only way to save his life is to destroy what he’s created, but that’s easier said than done.

To destroy TINCAN means shutting down the servers deep under the company’s headquarters which are guarded by a many-tentacled Teuth Demon. It also means wiping user data, stealing billions in advertising, and making enemies of several rich and influential people.

Realizing she and Kennedy need help Buffy calls in the debt Koh owes her, but things don’t go exactly as planned. Worth a look.

Fairest #6

fairest-6-coverThe first story arc of Fairest comes to a close. In part six of “Wide Awake” the Snow Queen faces off against Hadeon. Although last issue’s final panel made it seem like Snow would be getting help from the seven faerie godmothers the issue takes an immeadiate turn as Snow has to go one-on-one against the witch.

Luckily for the Snow Queen she gets an unexpected ally when Briar Rose shows up to face the woman who tried to kill her at birth. And, as so happens when magic backfires, Briar Rose turns out to be just the right woman to put the bitch down for good.

There’s plenty of action here, although the comic is constantly cutting away from it for some reason. And in the end Hadeon gets what she deserves and true to Jonah Panghammer‘s word Ali Baba find true love (now he just has to keep in mind her short temper).

The series may not quite go out with a bang. It’s still quite good but I’m ready for the comic to move in a different direction. Next month brings us a new arc featuring Beauty and the Beast in 1940’s Los Angeles. Worth a look.

Atomic Robo Presents Real Science Adventures #5

atomic-robo-presents-real-science-adventures-5-coverI never thought I’d say this, but I’ve ready for this series of Atomic Robo to end. Atomic Robo Presents Real Science Adventures #5 isn’t a bad issue by any means, but the two ongoing stories involving The Sparrow and Bruce Lee feel played out at this point and what we get in issue #5 is really nothing more than setting the table for next month’s conclusion of each tale.

The other short stories include a republishing “An Appointment in Madrid,” in “Bloop” Robo searches the ocean for a supposedly giant creature that made the unusual sound, and in “Once Upon a Time in China” (the best entry this month) the Robot is shot down by Japanese during WWII, stays with a family few days, and is surprised when a member of the family shows up to a book signing 50 years later.

Is it still enjoyable? Will I still pick up the final issue of the series? Of course, but with the new series The Flying She-Devils of the Pacific already underway, I’m ready to delve into an ongoing arc with the more consistent art of Scott Wegener and (hopefully) a bigger payoff than what I’ve seen here. For fans.
