Daredevil #16

daredevil-16-coverRarely have a seen a comic start so well and fall so far so quickly. In the first two-thirds of Daredevil #16 writer Mark Waid delivers a terrific story of Iron Man, Dr. Strange, and Henry Pym trying to save a comatose Daredevil the Nanobots implanted in his brain in Latveria.

Pym, shrunk-down, inserted into Murdock’s brain, attempts to destroy the Nanobots loose in Daredevil’s mind, but what makes the storyline work so well is the odd nature of Matt Murdock’s gift that causes both Pym and Murdock’s feeling, senses, and memories to start blurring between them. Aside from being a really cool story, it’s nice way to save the Latverian arc which was drawn out far too long.

However, the final third of the story (teased on the cover) makes so little sense I don’t know where to begin. On arriving back at his office Murdock is confronting by Foggy who dissolves their partnership after finding the bones of Murdock’s father in his desk drawer.

Justice League International #12

jli-new-52-12-coverI gave up on this title a couple of months ago but seeing how this was to be the series’ final issue I decided to pick it up. The story Dan Jurgens sets out to tell is a good one, but whether it be his limitations or (more likely) the meddlesome efforts of DC Editorial, the story simply isn’t that well told.

In the final issue of the comic the members of the team (except those still hositalized) gather together to pay their respects to their fallen companion Rocket Red only to be attacked by the brother of Lightwave who blames the group for the super-villain’s death.

Mostly presented through the eyes of Batman (one of the characters not staying with the team) what we get is awkward and hamfisted storytelling that’s rushed and finished in odd fashion as they group make the angered youngster see the error of his ways before coming to the conclusion that they should stick together, regardless of the United Nations dissolving the group.

Green Lantern #11

green-lantern-new-52-11-coverHal Jordan and Sinestro deal with the fallout of their time spent with the Indigo Tribe as the ring given to Jordan by Sinestro now completely follows the Green Lantern’s commands, but Jordan’s joy is short-lived when he discovers Black Hand is no longer under the sway of an Indigo Power Ring.

I’m not really looking forward to Blackest Night being brought into the New 52 with Black Hand reclaiming his role as the Black Lantern, but he certainly makes a credible threat for the combined forces of Jordan and Sinestro. At least it appears Black Hand’s powers and plans apparently don’t include putting together a zombie army of fallen super-heroes and super-villains.

We also get further teased about the Guardians upcoming plans and the mysterious “Third Army” which will apparently replace the Corps as the heroes make a short trip to Korugar to search for the Book of Black hidden in a corner of Sinestro’s Bat Cave. Yeah, even Sinestro has Batman-envy. Hit-and-Miss.

Captain America #15

captain-america-15-coverCaptain America and the Falcon deal with the new threat of the Discordians, the latest weapon pointed at Cap and his friends by the triumverate of Codename: Bravo, Baron Zemo, and Queen Hydra.

Although the Discordians cause quite a bit of damage in a small amount of time they’re stopped relatively easily. Sure, the Falcon gets thrown around a little, but then again, he is the Falcon.

The best parts of this issue are the small glances and unsaid words between Captain America and Diamondback and later between Diamondback and Sharon Carter whose “stay the hell away from my man” vibe couldn’t be any stronger if she was shouting it at Cap’s ex.

Captain America #15 isn’t a bad issue, but the Discordians aren’t really that impressive and I’ve already grown tired of Bravo and Queen Hydra’s (failed) attempts to fuck with Cap far from the battlefield. It’s worth a look but not an issue you’ll miss much if you decide not to pick it up.

[Marvel, $3.99]
