Fairest #2

After awaking Sleeping Beauty with true love’s kiss (without the love part) the thief and princess (along with their impish friend Jonah Panghammer) find themselves on the run from the reawakened Snow Queen. As Briar Rose and Ali Baba find themselves fleeing into the cold wilderness before the Snow Queen tires of torturing the goblins who held her sleeping body captive and turns her righteous anger their way.

After being captured by Ice Giants and thrown into a sack to be taken back to the Snow Queen the unlikely threesome pass the time as Panghammer tells them the story of the Snow Queen. Well, that is until they find themselves dumped unceremoniously at her feet wanting to hear the end of the tale.

Issue #2 continues to impress, and start to give us a little more insight into Briar and the Snow Queen, but it looks like we’ll have to wait at least one more issue of this opening six-issue arc before we get any real answers. Worth a look.

Supreme #63

Of all of Image Comics early to mid-1990’s titles my favorite, by far, was Supreme. Almost two decades before Mark Waid‘s Irredeemable, Supreme was created by Rob Liefeld around the idea of Superman without the patriotism and strong moralistic foundation of a certain Man of Steel.

After appearances in Youngblood, Supereme’s own title begins much like Superman Returns, with the character returning to Earth after years in space to a far more advanced world than that which he left, filled with new super-human heroes and villains, and old enemies.

The character’s origins and were tweaked by several writers over the years including Keith Giffen and Alan Moore. Moore’s take on the character abandoned much of the character’s history and rebooted him as Silver Age Superman for the modern world in tales featuring multiple realities, numerous versions of the character, time paradoxes, the Supergirl-ish Suprema, and even a Supreme version of Hoppy the Marvel Bunny called Oscar the Omnibunny.

Justice League International #8

justice-league-international-new-52-8-coverWith several of the team members still out of action, and the United Nations Security Chief still doing her best to dismantle the team before more trouble lands on her doorstep, Batman reaches out for some help by bringing Batwing in on the case.

Although Batwing certainly makes sense with the makeup of the team being from countries all over the world, it is a little too coincidental that the African hero just happened to be in town right when Batman needed him. (And why wouldn’t Bats go to someone close by, like say his former partner Nightwing, for help?)

After taking an almost immediate dislike to Booster Gold the three heroes fight off Lightweaver as Breakdown escapes custody. Things are no easier for the heroes still at the hospital as Guy Gardner, Godiva, and August General in Iron try to stop a rampaging O.M.A.C.

There’s plenty of action, and the inclusion of two more New 52 characters, but the execution is only so-so. Still, it’s worth a look.

Avengers vs. X-Men #1

avengers-vs-x-men-1-coverHow far would you go to protect your planet? How about your entire species? With the Phoenix Force returning to Earth for the obvious chosen new host of Hope Summers, the Avengers and the X-Men find themselves with opposing viewpoints that aren’t going to solved by mere words.

Captain America wants to take Hope and sequester her away from the Phoenix Force before it arrives. Cyclops wants Hope to embrace the power, and with it help Mutant-kind back from the edge of extinction. Not surprisingly, given the stakes, neither man cares much for what Hope wants for herself.

The rise in tension leads to Cap and Cyclops having a frank discussion on the shores of Utopia that ends far from peacefully with Cap blasted back into the sea, the Avengers assembling overhead, and the X-Men preparing to defend their homes and Hope from the invaders (who include former X-Men Wolverine and Beast) who have arrived to kidnap a teenage girl from a sovereign nation.
