Deadpool #47

deadpool-47-coverDeadpool‘s battle with his evil twin comprised of a collection of his former body parts continues. Now that there are two Deadpools, his antics have gotten (even more) out of control. Something has to be done. Enter Captain America.

I’ve stayed out of this Deadpool/Evil Deadpool arc until now, but with Cap’s appearance I decided to give it a try. The early fight between Deadpool and Captain America is actually kinda fun, as Cap doesn’t believe any of the Merc with a Mouth’s nonsense about an evil twin. Deadpool even goes so far as to use Cap’s shield against him.

The rest of the comic about Evil Deadpool taking a job to kill a kid, and regular Deadpool (using his weird-ass logic) deciding to kidnap a totally different kid at gunpoint to draw out both his evil twin and Captain America, is certainly bizarre, but isn’t anywhere near as much fun. Hit-and-Miss.

Justice League International #4

justice-league-international-new-52-4-coverThe team, split up into pairs, attempted to do reconnaissance and stop the giant menacing robots looming around the world. They were unsuccessful, as was Guy Gardner who attempted a solo run on Peraxxus‘ ship in orbit above the Earth.

Now reunited, the team comes together for one last ditch effort to stop the alien from destroying the planet merely to plunder its remnants. Issue #4 works well, but the story does feel a little drawn out. The story arc could easily have finished by the end of this issue and moved on to new business, like the team members getting better acquainted, in issue #5.

Writer Dan Jurgens does give us some fun moments (hell, he’s even getting me to change my mind about Godiva) and the art by Aaron Lopresti fits the story well, even if Peraxxus’ design is far too reminiscent of Galactus) including a full-page spread of the team jumping back into action. Worth a look.

The Defenders #1

the-defenders-1-coverThere are groups of heroes that if you found yourself in a pickle you’d surely want to ride to the rescue. And there are groups whose arrival would fill you with dread by making you realize that things have gone from bad to worse. In a nutshell, that’s the difference between the Avengers and the Defenders.

The new team reunites three of the original members (Doctor Strange, Namor, the Silver Surfer) with Red She-Hulk (who may, or may not just be going by She-Hulk now?), and Iron Fist. At the request of the Hulk, the team comes together to fight a Black Hulk called Nul: The Breaker of Worlds.

Their quest leads them to Wundagore Mountain, who Strange informs us is “Dr. Moreau’s Island made flesh.” On the top of the island the team will face challenges in an attempt to save the world from the impossible.

Super Dinosaur #6

super-dinosaur-6-coverAfter a short break Super Dinosaur returns as Derek Dynamo and Super Dinosaur take on the evil Squidious who attempts to stop the pair from blowing up the underwater tunnels to Inner-Earth.

After a battle on both land and sea Derek and SD return home where Super Dinosaur begins to lament the amount of time Derek is spending with Erin (even going so far as to create the girl her own version of Wheels), but he may have found a new playmate for himself in Erin’s sister.

Although the battle with Squidious provided quite a few pages of fun, I did want a little more out of the exchange between Doctor Dynamo and Max Maximus which really only rehashes the cliffhanger introduced in the last issue concerning the fate of the Doctor’s wife (and Derek’s mother).

It’s a solid issue. Even if almost all of the crazy insanity takes place in the story’s first-half, the remaining pages deal with important relationships and subtle changes at the Dynamo Dome. Worth a look.
