Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Nine #3

btvs-season-nine-3-coverThe world without magic storyline continues as Buffy and the Scoobies are faced with two oddities that need answering. The first is Severin who has an unusual power to rip the demon from vampires and return the human body to a natural state of death. The second is the overly aggressive nature of vampires who have been sired since the Seed was destroyed.

Spike‘s investigation into the Siphon will answer one of Buffy’s questions (if he’s not too late for our plucky heroine). As to the vampires themselves, it appears with the hell dimensions now closed from our reality new vampires are really vampires, they’re zombie vampires, or zompires as Xander names them.

I was really impressed with issue #3, especially the dialogue and character interactions which felt much more natural and Whedon-esque than the previous issue (also penned by Andrew Chambliss). The story arcs seem more focused and character driven, and there’s some great humor throughout. If this is where Season Nine is going to go, I’m on-board. Worth a look.

The All-New Batman: The Brave and the Bold #13

all-new-batman-brave-and-bold-13-coverWith Batman near death the Phantom Stranger assembles Robins throughout time to save the Dark Knight Detective. Dick Grayson (in his original Nightwing costume), Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, Damian, and Carrie Kelly are all brought together to save their partner.

After some initial in-fighting (including Damian and Steph going at it over whether a girl can actually be Robin) the sidekicks come up with a plan. They will sneak the dying Batman into one of Ra’s al Ghul‘s Lazarus Pits and use it to revive him.

Longtime Batman fans should definitely seek this issue out and pick it up. Aside from being the only comic where you’re going to get this assembly of characters, writer Sholly Fisch and artist Rick Burchett take time to make several references to Batman’s history including “Robin Dies at Dawn.”

The comic ends with a discussion between the Phantom Stranger and Madame Xanadu. Xanadu congratulates the Stranger on the success of his plan but reminds him Robin wasn’t Batman’s only partner. Best of the week.

Darkwing Duck #18

darkwing-duck-18-coverIt all ends here. The final issue of Boom Studios Darkwing Duck wraps up the DuckTales crossover “Dangerous Currency” and says goodbye to these characters as all Disney properties head to Marvel Comics. Another one of my favorite comics has come to an end.

Picking up from the events in Ducktales #6 (read that review) Darkwing Duck and friends are astonished at the sudden appearance of both Negaduck and Morgana as the true source of the dark slime is revealed to be Negaduck himself!

Darkwing is faced with a terrible decision. To free Morgana from the pocket dimension in which she is trapped he must also free one of his deadliest foes. Of course for a hero like Darkwing there’s no choice at all.

With Negaduck brought back into our world the characters find themselves completely at his mercy. That is until Scrooge McDuck calls in his secret weapon – Donald Duck! That’s right, Donald Duck saves the day by inciting the populace of both towns to fight back against the slime.

DuckTales #6

ducktales-6-coverThe final issue of the series continues the DuckTales/Darkwing Duck crossover “Dangerous Currency.” Magica and the Phantom Blot have taken control of Duckberg and St. Canard mutating both cities with the magic and the blot’s dark matter. The first issue for our heroes to solve is to find a cure for those infected, including Honker and Hewey, Dewey, and Louie, who have become classic Disney monsters and are wreaking havoc throughout the city.

Scrooge takes a sample of the dark matter to Gyro Gearloose’s laboratory. Once a cure is found, the kids are saved, and Magica’s plan is uncovered with the help of Gizmoduck, Darkwing Duck and the team can set their attention on stopping the real villains of the piece including an old Darkwing foe who returns on the final page.

A fun issue from beginning to end. I especially liked the classic Disney villains from Sleeping Beauty and Fantasia used here. My only complaint is the story concludes in Darkwing Duck #18 and then we have to say goodbye to these characters. Worth a look.
