Secret Six #34

secret-six-34-coverAlthough the word “family” is never uttered, that’s what this issue is really about. After returning from Hell and saving another of Scandal‘s girlfriends (in a brutal opening sequence) the team returns home to lick their wounds and get back to live as usual (or as usual as it gets for these characters).

While Scandal tries to bury the hatchet with Ragdoll, and King Shark freaks out with how happy Catman is acting, Bane goes out on his first date. It’s unconventional (Bane tells the stripper his life story while atop a Ferris Wheel before severely wounding several would-be-robbers), but turns out to be a pleasant night for the couple (or as pleasant as things get for these characters).

There’s still plenty of fallout to come, including a difficult choice by Scandal and the reported return of a Bane on Venom, but this single character-driven issue (which has its share of bloody panels) is a nice change-of-pace after the trip to Hell and back. Worth a look.

Flashpoint #2 (of 5)

flashpoint-2-coverFlashpoint continues with three stories. One showcases Deathstroke and Emperor Aquaman‘s take-no-prisoners attitude towards trespassers on the high seas. The second involves Wonder Woman‘s encounter with an American special forces officer who just happens to be named Steve Trevor. Both help further paint the bleak landscape of this transformed Flashpoint reality.

It’s the third story however that’s the most important. Barry Allen attempts to convince this reality’s Batman (Thomas Wayne) that he isn’t crazy, is from an alternate reality, and can fix the world… if Batman helps him get struck by lightning. As you might guess, it takes a little convincing.

It’s not a bad second issue, although the glimpses we get of both Aquaman and Wonder Woman make me cringe at the thought of either of them being the center of future issues. And the consequence of Barry Allen’s experiment does have an unintentionally funny ring to it. (And it’s certainly better than the other off-shoot mini-series which also hit shelves this week.) Worth a look.

Fear Itself #3 (of 7)

fear-itself-3-coverEarth is going to Hell. The Gods of Asgard have abandoned the realm to return to Asgard and begin readying for a war whose first casualty will be the planet Earth. All across the world heroes and villains are picking up magic hammers and becomes mindless slaves (or sometimes not, a little consistency please) to the All-Father of Fear.

However, none of that is what this issue, and it appears ultimately this entire mini-series, will be remembered for. We knew Marvel was going to find a way to get Steve Rogers back into the role of Captain America before Marvel’s big budget summer flick hit screens this summer. What we didn’t know was what would happen to Bucky Barnes. Now we do. And it’s not pretty.

After returning the character to the comics for the first time in decades and actually finding a way to make me care about Captain America’s former sidekick, Ed Brubaker isn’t even on hand when Marvel Comics and writer Matt Fraction decide to kill him at the hands of the Red Skull’s daughter. Sigh. It may be worth a look, but don’t expect it to be a pleasant one.

The Mission #4

the-mission-4-coverWhat if someone you never met, walked up to you and demanded you perform unspeakable acts? And the consequences to you and the lives of your family, should yo refuse, would be dire? That’s the basic premise behind The Mission.

The latest issue finds Paul with a much simpler, and he hopes fall less bloody, mission. All he need do is break into the Iroquois County Museum of History and steal a single artifact. Let’s just say things don’t go exactly as planned.

With only two issues to go I have to say I’m a little mystified how Jon and Erich Hoeber plan on wrapping up a series that’s done its best to keep everything close to the vest. We still don’t know who the mysterious man some believe to be the archangel Gabriel truly is, who he really works for, why Paul was chosen for assignments he seems ill-suited for, and who the mysterious “the other side” is as well.

This issue once again gives us an egaging story where Paul finds quickly spiraling far out of his control into a bloody mess. Would we expect anything less from the screenwriters of Red? Worth a look.
