Aladdin DVD reviewThe 2019 live-action remake of Disney’s animated film of the same name is a mostly harmless, and mostly pointless, endeavor that adds little (if anything) new to the tale (other than giving the Genie a girlfriend). As in the previous remakes, the plot and songs are brought in from the original (although this version sadly lacks Robin Williams‘ madcap antics that helped elevate an otherwise pedestrian story).

Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott star as street thief Aladdin and Princess Jasmine with Will Smith stepping in as the Genie and Marwan Kenzari providing the most bland version of the villain Jafar possible. Although there’s certainly money spent on CGI for the project, the film lacks any of the magic of the animated feature.

Men in Black: International

Men in Black: International Blu-ray reviewOther than its existence, the most shocking thing about Men in Black: International is that it isn’t a complete dumpster fire and does deliver some enjoyable moments over its uneven 114-minute running time (although, in the end, the entire enterprise is largely forgettable). The movie franchise dormant for seven years is reawoken by bringing in Thor: Ragnarok stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson as the primary agents. Thompson is cast as the young woman smart enough to uncover the existence of MIB while Hemsworth is the weary agent who has been skating on his reputation for years.

The plot is more complicated than it needs to be as Agent M (Tessa Thompson) is sent to London by Agent O (Emma Thompson) who suspects something foul may be happening on the other side of the pond. M soon hooks up with Agent H (Hemsworth) only to bungle their assignment and end up on the run with a valuable piece of alien technology that a race known as the Hive are desperate to get there hands on.

Titans - The Complete First SeasonSurprisingly, DC Universe’s Titans isn’t the dumpster fire that it appeared to be from the show’s initial trailer. In the show’s First Season, recently orphaned teenager Rachel Roth (Teagan Croft) brings together brooding police detective and former vigilante sidekick Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites), amnesiac alien Koriand’r (Anna Diop), and shape-shifting teen Gar Logan (Ryan Potter). Over the course of the season the show will also introduce a few of Dick’s crime-fighting buddies such as Donna Troy (Conor Leslie), and Hawk (Alan Ritchson) and Dove (Minka Kelly).

Delivering a Robin who didn’t get out from Batman’s shadow before a bit too much of his mentor’s world view rubbed off on him is a questionable one, but also helps frame Dick as every bit as lost as the young girl with bizarre powers who he tries to help. Dick’s questionable choices are explored in several episodes, and the arrival of Jason Todd (Curran Walters) on the scene as the new Robin creates even more.

LEGO DC: Batman - Family Matters DVD reviewThe latest LEGO DC straight-to-video offers two storylines intertwined by the common theme of family. The more interesting of the two centers around the sudden appearance of the Red Hood (Jason Spisak) who picks off the Bat-Family one-by-one while enlisting the help of several other Bat-Villains including the Penguin (Tom Kenny), Riddler (André Sogliuzzo), Killer Croc (Nolan North), and Scarecrow (Steve Blum). Less deadly in LEGO form, the Red Hood still works fairly well as DC LEGO takes more family-friendly approach to the former Robin becoming a super-villain.

The other storyline involves Batman (Troy Baker) growing weary of being Bruce Wayne and deciding to sell off the company whose new invention Brother Eye falls into the hands of Two-Face (Christian Lanz) and becomes a problem the Bat-Family, with the Red Hood’s help, will need to solve. Just as Jason Todd will reconsider his revenge and reclaim a role within the Bat-Family, Batman will reconsider the importance of his alter-ego to Gotham City.

Guilty Pleasure – Coyote Ugly

Coyote Ugly DVD review

Throwback Thursday takes us back to… wait, has it really been 19 years? Piper Perabo stars in 2000’s Coyote Ugly as aspiring songwriter Violet Sanford who leaves the comfort of her sleepy New Jersey suburb to move to New York City and become a singing barmaid at a trendy bar known for its attractive waitresses dancing on the bar.

While not what one would call objectively good (sappy and predictable are both apt descriptions), the movie does work as a guilty pleasure mostly for Perabo’s lead performance, the high energy from her often scantily-clad co-stars (Izabella Miko, Bridget Moynahan, Tyra Banks), and the film’s soundtrack sporting four songs written by Diane Warren (which proved more successful than the film itself).

The larger supporting cast includes Maria Bello as the bar’s gruff owner with a heart of gold, Adam Garcia as Violet’s love interest (who is thrown together with Violet in a sickeningly-sweet meet-cute), and John Goodman as Violet’s disapproving father, both of her move to New York and how she spends her nights.
