5 Film Collection Action PackThis five-disc collection of action films contains three enjoyable action flicks and a pair of clunkers for a fairly reasonable price. The Last Boy Scout (an enjoyable collaboration between writer Shane Black and director Tony Scott) teams seedy private eye (Bruce Willis) and former football star (Damon Wayans) in a murder investigation. Under Siege is one of Steven Seagal‘s better films casting him as a former Navy SEAL demoted to a cook in the right place at the right time when terrorists (led by Tommy Lee Jones) attack his ship. Tango & Cash is the ridiculous, but fun, pairing of Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell as rival super cops forced to work together after they are framed for murder.

Keanu

KeanuWritten by and starring comedic duo Key & Peele, Keanu feels like most movies based on sketch comedy. More a collection of gags than a truly engaging story, the film offers the basic set-up of two regular guy thrown into desperate circumstances through no fault of their own when a gangster’s kitten shows up on Rell’s (Jordan Peele) door. When the cat is stolen the pair will struggle to play the roles of drug dealing killers to get little Keanu back.

Like most sketch comedy films, the results are mixed at best. Although several of the movie’s jokes work there are just as many that don’t hit their mark. Despite the undeniable cuteness of the kitten, the film’s weak premise may offer plenty of opportunities for the pair to act like fools but that doesn’t necessarily translate into a coherent or entertaining film.

Money Monster

Money MonsterDirector Jodie Foster‘s Money Monster is an intriguing set-up that gets lost along the way falling down a rabbit hole of conspiracy and increasingly hard-to-swallow events. The film features George Clooney, as the cable host of a financial program known more for its host’s outrageous behavior than honest stock tips, and Julia Roberts as his disapproving producer. When one of his viewers (Jack O’Connell) shows up with a gun and a bomb vest demanding answers to how a guaranteed stock dropped due to an unexplained “glitch,” cast and crew are held hostage and forced to begin investigating matters.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the ShadowsThe sequel to 2014’a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles returns Megan Fox and the rage-roid Turtles for a new adventure when scientist Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry) breaks the Shredder (Brian Tee) out of prison and helps the leader of the Foot Clan assemble the pieces for a dimensional portal to open the way for General Krang (Brad Garrett) and his Technodrome.

Introducing the characters of Casey Jones (Stephen Amell) and mutants Rocksteady (Stephen Farrelly) and Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams), Out of the Shadows plays closer to the themes of the cartoon. While still flawed and ridiculous at times (as in how it gets Fox into a slutty schoolgirl outfit), Out of the Shadows is an improvement thanks to the new characters and better story. Will Arnett returns for comic relief as cameraman turned city hero Vernon Fenwick. Laura Linney also joins the cast as the police chief whose loyalties and motivations swing wildly depending on what is required in each scene to scene.

The Transformers: The Movie

The Transformers: The MovieSet 20 years in the future after the events of the show’s Second Season, 1986’s The Transformers: The Movie is memorable for killing off several major characters, introducing new concepts into the canon, and (despite its flaws) remaining the best theatrical Transformers movie. The strength of the film comes in it’s opening act during the Decepticons’ attack on Autobot City on Earth. Making way for new characters such as the energetic Hot Rod (Judd Nelson) and the crotchety Kup (Lionel Stander), the sequence kills off several original characters including Prowl (Michael Bell), Brawn (Corey Burton), Ratchet, Ironhide (Peter Cullen), and Optimus Prime (Cullen).

The death of Optimus Prime is a seminal moment for those who grew up with the toys, comics, and cartoon series. With the Matrix of leadership passed on to a brand-new character in Ultra Magnus (Robert Stack), the Autobots attempt to survive unaware that an even greater threat in the world-eating Unicron (Orson Welles) is looming. Taking the battered Megatron (Frank Welker) and remaking him into his lieutenant Galvatron (Leonard Nimoy) along with new soldiers, Unicron hopes to crush the Autobots.
