Point Break

“You’re about to jump out a perfectly good airplane Johnny, how do you feel about that?”

Point BreakNot unlike Keanu Reeves himself in the film, Point Break is as dumb as a bag of rocks… but gloriously so. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty, The Hurt Locker), the 1991 film casting Reeves as an undercover FBI agent looking for bank-robbing surfers led by the charming Bodhi (Patrick Swayze) has no illusions about what kind of movie it is. A pure B-movie action flick about surfing and sky diving, Point Break proves to be better than the sum of its parts.

Throw in Gary Busey and Lori Petty and you’ve got the makings of a complete disaster and unwatchable trainwreck. Yet, somehow, Bigelow and company pull it off by embracing the sheer ridiculousness of what we see unfold (something the best-forgotten recent remake failed to understand) set around some well-shot action sequences. The result isn’t Shakespeare, but Point Break works as an enjoyable action bromance between cop and robber who, in another life, could have been the best of friends. And its very existence inspires Hot Fuzz two of its best moments.

Batman: Bad Blood

Batman: Bad BloodBatman: Bad Blood is the third straight-to-DVD movie in the series that began with 2014’s Son of Batman. Following the events of Batman vs. Robin, the third movie continues to adapt previous comic storylines (this time both Dick Grayson‘s temporary stint as Batman and the events of “Leviathan“) while growing Batman’s supporting cast. Written by J.M. DeMatteis, Bad Blood begins with Batman‘s (Jason O’Mara) disappearance from Gotham while saving new vigilante Batwoman (Yvonne Strahovski) from an attack by the League of Assassins led by the Heretic (Travis Willingham).

Realizing Gotham needs a Batman, Nighwing (Sean Maher) takes on the mantle of the Bat while working along with Batwoman and Damian (Stuart Allan) to keep Gotham safe while investigating Batman’s whereabouts. Like most of Grant Morrison’s later work, “Leviathan” is messy, over-complicated, and flawed. DeMatteis takes the best aspects of the story, boiling it down, and merges it with Dick and Damian’s entertaining time as the Dynamic Duo.

The Mediocre Dinosaur

  • Title: The Good Dinosaur

The Good DinosaurWithout question The Good Dinosaur is the weakest Pixar movie to date. Closer in tone and aspirations to The Croods or Blue Sky’s Ice Age franchise, the film tells the uninspired coming of age tale of a frightened young dinosaur named Arlo (Raymond Ochoa) who is forced to grow up after being separated from his family.

The Good Dinosaur isn’t a bad movie per se. It’s an okay kid’s film, and may mostly keep your interest, but it’s certainly lackluster compared to the rest of Pixar’s films – all of which are both more visually and emotionally engaging than the story of young Arlo and his pet human Spot (Jack Bright).

Available on DVD, Blu-ray, and 3D Blu-ray, extras include a digital copy of the film, audio commentary, and several short featurettes (between 2-7 minutes each) on the film, characters, and dinosaurs in the movie.

[Walt Disney Studios, 3D Blu-ray $39.99 / Blu-ray $39.99 / DVD $29.99]

Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture CollectionMuch like Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture 50th Anniversary Collection, the Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture 50th Anniversary Collection is a basic re-issue of the 2009 Blu-ray release collecting all four Star Trek: The Next Generation feature films in a single collection. As with the other release, it’s a bit of a mixed bag with some, but certainly not all, of the extras available in the movies’ individual home video releases.

Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture CollectionStar Trek: The Original Motion Picture 50th Anniversary Collection is a basic repackaging of the 2009 release which collected the original six Star Trek movies together in a single set on Blu-ray. As with most collections of this type, some of the basic extras with each movie are included but not as many as you will find each individual release. It’s likely you already own the movies you want from this set, but if not the $50 price for all six movies isn’t too shabby (and currently you can actually find the set heavily discounted at about 60% of that price online).
