sherlock-season-two-blu-rayFormer Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss (who does double duty by playing Sherlock’s brother Mycroft Holmes) continue their reimagining of Sherlock Holmes in modern day London. The Second Season starts out with one of Holmes’ most famous cases and the introduction of “The Woman,” followed by a demon hound loose on the moors, and ends with the fall, and apparent death, of the detective at the hands of Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott).

Of the three episodes from this season, the first (“A Scandal in Belgravia“) is my favorite. The episode introduces the character of Irene Adler (Lara Pulver), the only character to ever best Holmes in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories. Pulver makes a deliciously conniving Adler and brings out a side in this version of Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) we had not seen before.

chuck-season-five-dvdThe final season of Chuck finds the Intersect in the head of Morgan Grimes (Joshua Gomez) and our super-CIA spies entering the private sector as Carmichael Industries. As Chuck (Zachary Levi) and Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) enjoy married life, Casey (Adam Baldwin) gets a girlfriend (Carrie-Anne Moss) and goes to jail with Lester (Vik Sahay).

This year’s missions include a computer super-virus, the return of old foes Decker (Richard Burgi) and Shaw (Brandon Routh), and an even deadlier new one in Nicholas Quinn (Angus Macfadyen). We’ll also learn Sarah’s darkest secret and meet her mother (Cheryl Ladd), Chuck will briefly return to his hacker roots, and two members of the team not named Chuck will have adverse effects from the Intersect as the super-computer begins to melt their brains and alter their personalities. And in the series’ final arc Chuck finds himself at war with a wife who doesn’t recognize him and a vengeful former spy who wants the Intersect for himself.

No longer the new kid on the block, Annie Walker’s (Piper Perabo) second year working for the CIA sends her all around the world including Paris, Buenos Aires, Belarus, Venice, Berlin, and back to the Farm to find a traitor burning the CIA’s best and brightest new recruits.

Only a pair of episodes, the season-opener and trip to Mexico City with Joan (Kari Matchett) include Ben Mercer (Eion Bailey) as the second season is built on Annie finding her own footing with the CIA and turning into one of their best field agents.

We also get the return of Mossad Agent Eyal Lavine (Oded Fehr) for a pair of episodes including his search for the man who killed his sister, Annie will have to break the news to a friend (Laara Sadiq) that her recently deceased husband was secretly working for the CIA for two decades, and Auggie (Christopher Gorham) gets his own episode as he goes after the man responsible for his blindness and the death of several members of his former unit.

haywire-blu-rayDespite making more than 30 movies over his career, Haywire represents the first time director Steven Soderbergh sets out to make a rather straightforward action film. Well… straightforward in terms of delivery, the film is saddled with one hell of a convoluted plot by screenwriter Lem Dobbs that will only attempt to fully explain itself in the movie’s closing moments.

At times you’ll notice Soderbergh’s hand with his stylized camera work and use of music, but the film also has several sequence where the style drops away and the director gives us several brutal action scenes.

We begin with Mallory Kane (Gina Carano), a black ops soldier who has been betrayed by her boss and former lover Kenneth (Ewan McGregor) and is now on the run. With limited resources she will hunt down each of the men who betrayed her and get her revenge.

mission-impossible-ghost-protocol-blu-rayDirected by Brad Bird, the latest Mission: Impossible flick puts Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) together with a new team (Paula Patton, Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner) to stop a crazy Russian (Michael Nyqvist) from starting a nuclear war.

After an attempt to retrieve information in the Kremlin ends in disaster with the team blamed for a terrorist bombing the IMF is disbanded leaving only these four agents, and whatever they have with them, to stop the real terrorists and prove their innocence.The mission will take the team from Russia to the United Arab Emirates to India. The movie works as well on Blu-ray as it did in theaters. The story and stunts hold up quite well and even knowing the small twist of Ethan’s wife (Michelle Monaghan) won’t spoil anything for you a second time around.
