Quiz Lady

Flirting with themes of fandom and family, Quiz Show stars Awkwafina as an isolated young woman whose main pleasures in life are her dog and the popular quiz show she has watched since she was four years-old. Her mother running away from her nursing home, leaving a large amount of debt, and the arrival of her sister (Sandra Oh) will push Anne out of her comfort zone. When her sister takes note of Anne’s quiz knowledge, a plan begins to form for the pair to come up with the cash needed to pay off their mother’s gambling debts to a loan shark (the same one who has stolen Anne’s dog).

A Deadly Invitation

Giving off strong Murder She Wrote vibes, Invitación a un Asesinato stars Regina Blandón as a famous true crime podcaster who her eccentric sister Olivia (Maribel Verdú) invites to a party along with several friends which will take place on her yacht and remote beach estate. In the kind of scene that only takes place in movies like this, Olivia provides motive for murder for all of her guests and when someone turns up dead Agatha (Blandón) will help a local police officer solve the crime.

Dante's Hotel

Dante’s Hotel is one hell of a dumb horror movie about Father Time (a looming figuring in a Spirit Halloween Grim Reaper costume) taking 12 souls every 12 years from a downtown hotel on New Year’s Eve without any trace of bodies and always leaving the same survivor (Judd Nelson) for police to question. New Year’s Eve comes again with recovering alcoholic Goldie (AnnaLynne McCord) being the hostess for a party from which the malevolent spirit will choose a dozen new victims.

The Burial

Based on true events, The Burial offers the odd couple pairing of Tommy Lee Jones as the owner of a family funeral business in Mississippi who enlists the help of a flashy attorney (Jamie Foxx) after being taken advantage by the CEO (Bill Camp) of a Canadian company that backed out of a deal that would have saved the family business. The curmudgeonly Jeremiah O’Keefe (Jones) and the flashy  Willie E. Gary (Foxx) have their ups and downs, but the film is as much (if not more) about the respect and friendship that develops between the unlikely pair as the court case itself.

Jackie Brown

Taking advantage of Pam Grier‘s history blaxploitation films, Quentin Tarantino cast her in the title role of his 1997 adaptation of Elmore Leonard‘s novel Rum Punch. More than a quarter of a century later it remains the only non-original film Tarantino has created (which is interesting as some, although not me, argue it just may be his best work). Grier’s inclusion easily lets the viewer tie this film to her earlier works in film like Coffy and immediately understand the tone Tarantino is going for with the stylish Jackie Brown.
