The latest from writer/director Joe Carnahan is a mostly forgettable throwaway action flick featuring Kerry Washington and Omar Sy as former black-ops who come back together to protect their young son (Jahleel Kamara) and kill their former boss (Mark Strong) who has raised the bounty on their heads after a situation in a bank alerts him to their present. The rest of the cast includes the pair’s former co-workers (Marvin Jones III, Yoson An, Natalia Reyes, Jénel Stevens, and Sala Baker) now hunting them and other agents whose loyalties are more circumspect (Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Method Man, Marshall Cook, and Ed Quinn).

“To know is one thing, but to believe is completely different.”

The 2022 Swedish sci-fi film released in America for the first time asks questions about whether or not we are alone in the universe, but even more so it explores how we treat those who dare raise the question. The film has it where it counts exploring both the intellectual curiosity and emotional need of its characters as they search for the answer of what’s really out there.

This is  bad. Inoffensive, but bad. Geared towards younger audiences, and fans of the game which has been around since 2011, A Minecraft Movie is a train wreck of a film that other than it’s design has very little going for it. The story involves people finding their way into this alternate dimension where you can build basically any squarish item you can imagine. We start we Steve (Jack Black) who is the first to find the realm but unintentionally puts it in danger from the equivalent of a failed America’s Got Talent contestant turned evil queen.

In the middle of a winter storm, alone in the filthy apartment with the death body, Rosie starts having odd experiences resulting in her exploring the apartment and finding a locked room full of skulls, blood, a prayer/spell book, and a sacrificial Palo Mayombe cauldron which ties back to the film’s opening scene showing us Rosie’s last encounter with her grandmother on her first communion where she first got a glimpse of this hidden world.

Thunderbolts

  • Title: Thunderbolts*
  • IMDb: link

Very much in the vein of Guardians of the Galaxy or Suicide Squad, Thunderbolts* offers the teaming up of lovable losers. In the case of Thunderbolts* (the name of which turns out to be one of the movie’s better jokes), the group are all independent black-ops cleaners for Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) who, while under investigation from Congress about her illegal programs, has had each of them tying up any loose ends that would lead back to her.
