This Week in Independent Film

Based on real events, Angelina Jolie stars as Mariane Pearl struggling to find her journalist husband (Dan Futterman) who disappears while on a story in Pakistan.  Michael Winterbottom (A Cock and Bull Story, Wonderland) directs the film which also stars Archie Panjabi, Mohammed Afzal and Daud Khan.  Check out the official site.  The film opens wide in theaters on Friday and we’ll have the review.

Parker Posey stars as a New Yorker tired of her life and desperate for love.  She leaves the U.S. and travels to Paris to try to find love with a man she just met (Melvil Poupaud).  Gena Rowlands, Drea de Matteo, Lucy Gordon, Nadia Dajani, and Justin Theroux also star.  Check out the official site.  The film opens in select cities in limited release on Friday.

John Cusack plays an expert who disproves the supernatural (haven’t we already seen this movie earlier this year?); when he checks himself into the legendary haunted room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel he will discover some ghost stories aren’t stories at all.  Samuel L. Jackson, Tony Shaloub, and Mary McCormack also star.  Check out the official site.  The film scares itself into theaters everywhere on Friday.
