The Boys - The Big Ride television review

The first episode of the show’s Second Season gets us caught up on some, although certainly not all, of the fallout from Season One. Vought throws a public funeral for Translucent under the narrative he was killed by super terrorists (helping bolster support for supes within the military). Noticeable by his absence, until the final minute of the episode, is Butcher (Karl Urban) leaving us to wonder about his recent family reunion and where he’s been as the rest of the Boys have been hiding underground. Despite some mistrust issues, Starlight (Erin Moriarty) has agreed to help Hughie‘s (Jack Quaid) expose Vought, although he begins to have second thoughts given the group’s recent run-in with the CIA. Hughie’s refusal to be completely honest with with Annie doesn’t go unremarked.

Superman: The Animated Series - Solar Power television review

Today’s Throwback Thursday takes us back to the animated streets of Metropolis and a hero who can leap tall buildings in a single bound. “Solar Power” opens with a prison break as Edward Lytener (Robert Hays) escapes Stryker’s Prison with new tech and a new plan to take down Superman (Tim Daly). Now calling himself Luminus, Lytener uses satellites around Metropolis to filter the sun’s rays making the sun appear red. Part of the genius of the plan is that the villain instigates it during a period of stormy weather with dark gray skies leading to Superman unknowingly slowly weakening without the yellow sun’s rays to replenishing him. Once the clouds part, it becomes obvious what the villain has done.

Super Dinosaur - Storming the Castle television review

Dexter (Alessandro Juliani) takes in on himself to infiltrate Castle Maximus for clues to his missing wife, but when he runs into to trouble Derek (Valin Shinyei) and Super Dinosaur (Mac Heywood) show up to help out. “Storming the Castle” offers, by far, the most field time we’ve seen for Dexter’s father so far in the series (while also alluding to a past of such adventures). However, Dexter is outsmarted by Max Maximus (Marco Soriano) who spikes the drive Derek and his father make off with an attempt to free his own father from Earthcore. The episode also features a backstory on Erica (Shannon Chan-Kent) attempting to discover more about the secret project her parents have been working on only to be surprised when it turns out to be a gift for her.

Scooby-Doo! - Go Away Ghost Ship television review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to Scooby Doo, Where Are You! for another mystery involving some meddling kids and their talking dog. Mystery, Inc. decides to investigate the sudden appearance of the Ghost of Redbeard the Pirate (John Stephenson) whose pirate ship has been raiding local freighters owned by C.L. Magnus (Stephenson). The episode goes all in on pirates with Redbeard, his old school pirate ship and henchmen, and his secret hideout inside the caves of Skull Island. There’s even Redbeard’s ghost sword which chases the gang (and whose abilities aren’t completely explained away by “being on wires”).

Lucifer – BluBallz

Lucifer - BluBallz television review

“BluBallz” relies on one of the oldest television tropes of keeping Chloe (Lauren German) and Lucifer (Tom Ellis) from getting closer by the introduction of an ex (Justin Bruening) as a potential murder victim in their latest case and Lucifer completely misreading how to handle the situation. Taking questionable advice is the theme of the episode’s B-story in which Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt) attempts to become more emotionally available by adopting Ella‘s (Aimee Garcia) personality. The weakest episode of the season so far is really only memorable for its final moments in which Lucifer and Chloe’s relationship gets physical and Michael steps back in for a little mischief by allowing Dan (Kevin Alejandro) to see an entirely new side of Lucifer Morningstar.
