The Gifted - rX television review

The second episode of The Gifted is mainly about Kate (Amy Acker) and her children finding a home with the mutant underground while helping the injured Blink (Jamie Chung). On the flip side, after being pressured for nearly the entire episode, the captured Reed (Stephen Moyer) makes a compromise that likely he and his whole family may regret by agreeing to help the government take down the mutants in return for his family’s safety. When push comes to shove, whose trust will he betray? The other major storyline of the episode gives us Polaris‘ (Emma Dumont) early days in prison. Aside from the logistical issues of putting mutant prisoners in with humans rather than housing them in more secure facility, the mutant-dampening collars feel a bit too goofy (even for a show based on comic book characters) and it’s all-too-obvious that they are a major weakness in the only thing keeping the character from her friends.

“I thought this would be a little more reverential, less angel wing dumpster fire.”

Lucifer - The One with the Baby Carrot TV review

While Lucifer (Tom Ellis) and Chloe (Lauren German) investigate the murder of a comedian whose jokes were stolen by one of his colleagues, the show continues to lay the groundwork of the mysterious Sinnerman. Despite the lack of evidence that the mystery man even exists, Lieutenant Marcus Pierce (Tom Welling) confides in Lucifer that he’s had run-ins with the Sinnerman before and warns him off continuing down a dangerous path. While I still think there’s a 50/50 chance Pierce will be revealed to be the devil doppelganger at some point this season, making him and ally of Lucifer is an interesting path to go down. Either way, I’m curious to see where the pair’s secret investigation takes them.

Supergirl - Girl of Steel television review

Supergirl‘s return to television introduces Morgan Edge (Adrian Pasdar) as a new ongoing threat to National City while a strictly-business Kara (Melissa Benoist) continues to struggle to deal with the emotional toll of losing Mon-El (Chris Wood) while fighting off a new terrorist known as Bloodsport and running away from her non-super-hero responsibilities. While Bloodsport, and his phantom submarine, provides the immediate threat, it’s obvious Edge is going to be stepping into the role of the season’s larger villain-behind-the-scenes this season.

Hawaii Five-0 - Na La 'Ilio television review

Hawaii Five-0‘s Eighth Season got off to a rocky start with one of the worst episodes of the series. Things pick up a bit here, and the show finally takes time to acknowledge the absence of its two former cast members. “Na La ‘Ilio” is still far from one of the show’s best, but at least it’s a passable episode that introduces two more new members for the Five-0 task force in Eddie (the four-legged DEA agent shot in the opening sequence) and former Navy SEAL Junior Reigns (Beulah Koale) who basically just hangs around until McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) relents to give him a job – provided he can get through the police academy.

Inhumans - Divide and Conquer television review

“Divide and Conquer” gets Crystal (Isabelle Cornish) and Lockjaw to Earth, although the Inhuman royal court remains scattered. Black Bolt‘s (Anson Mount) time in prison is cut short thanks to the help of an Inhuman (Faleolo Alailima) and the mysterious Dr. Evan Declan (Henry Ian Cusick) whose interest in Inhumans has yet to be explored. Medusa (Serinda Swan) spends most of the episode wandering around aimlessly and breaking into a high-priced gated community (presumably because it has “royal” in the title). I’m not sure if she’s meant to seem brain-damaged (were her brains in her hair?), but it is insanely coincidental to discover she can read English and quickly make it to Black Bolt’s prison only seconds too late to catch her husband given how aimless she is in other scenes. Meanwhile on Attilan, Maximus (Iwan Rheon) continues to prove he’s the worst super-villain ever. Three episodes in, this show isn’t getting any better.
