Written and drawn by Tony Daniel, the first issue of Edenwood introduces us to Rion and his friends who get sucked into the expanding Edenwood. Unable to save his girlfriend, Rion finds himself apprenticed to a Demon Hunter fighting a war against demons and their rise across the world. Given the large three-year gap in Edenwood #1 its unclear whether Rion’s story will continue from this point or if the series may jump back and forth in time filling Rion into becoming a demon hunter of his own.
Edenwood #1 is a passable fantasy-horror comic, with some individual strong moments, setting the stage for the tale to follow, but I’ll admit being more drawn to the art in this first issue than the story. For a genre outside my wheelhouse, I don’t think there’s enough here to bring me back to see where Rion’s tale takes him, but for fans of the genre it might be worth a look.
