Near death, Sonja journeys into the diamond to converse with the god trapped within the jewel. Hoping to free the damned, those cursed by the choices they made, Sonja makes a decision that turns out to have unanticipated consequences. In the world both Kulan Gath, reincarnated in a mortal vessel, at least for a time, and Thord Varg each carve bloody swaths through the kingdom. The stories combine when Varg walks through the door created by Sonja, reengaging his enemy in a final battle.
Sonja’s choices allow her to battle Varg back to the real world, while fighting the temptations of the diamond all the while eventually returning it to its rightful owner who is moved by the gesture. Sonja is able to kill Varg, but hardly save Vestfold, and while her choices give her victory of sorts in this single battle they also allow Gath as well to return posing an even greater threat for tomorrow.
