Samara Weaving stars as a young woman from modest means marrying into the Le Domas Family who, on her wedding night, discovers she must play a game with the entire family known for their gaming empire. However, this will be no ordinary game night. With hide-and-seek chosen from a mystical box, Grace must successfully hide from the family in their mansion (providing a terrific setting for the action) as they hunt and prepare to sacrifice her on an altar before sunrise.
The setup for the dark comedy allows for plenty of thrills and action over the 95-minute running-time with Grace’s new husband (Mark O’Brien) waffling on whose side to choose, Grace fighting for her life, and the rest of the family (Adam Brody, Henry Czerny, Andie MacDowell, Melanie Scrofano, Elyse Levesque, and Nicky Guadagni), to various successful degrees, working together to murder the latest addition to their family while believing, if they fail, the Satanic bargain for the family’s prosperity will come due.
The script plays on the absurdity of the situation allowing plenty of dark comedy throughout with the stakes being quite literally kill or be killed leading to a bonkers ending that cements Ready or Not as an instantly rewatchable bloody treasure. Certainly ranking as one of Weaving’s better outings, the film was both a critical and box office success launching her as a lead actress capable of opening a film and a new scream queen for the horror genre.
