Starting off with clever meet-cute of the awkward Owen (Spike Fearn) falling for Emily (Sadie Soverall) on the dance floor where he works as a sound technician, Finding Emily begins in earnest when Owen discovers he’s missing one-digit from her phone number. With only her name to go by, his search begins.
The first would-be Emily (Angourie Rice) turns out to be a psych student who decides she can use Owen and his search as part of her dissertation on the absurdity of love. Offering to help, and even egging him on when he starts to give up, Emily pushes him into becoming the biggest story of the college starting a campus-wide debate whether his antics are romantic or creepy stalking behavior.
It’s clear from the outset where the film is going. To get there, the script by Rachel Hirons does need to fall into overly-elaborate rom-com cliche at times with, of course, late disappointment and eventual big romantic gesture.
I also found the ending, given the amount of damage done in the name of love, ultimately more depressing than uplifting. Are the two people who end up together right for each other? Maybe, but did they really have to ruin each others lives to get there?
