Splitsville

While a little uneven in spots, Splitsville made me laugh harder in the theater than I have in quite some time. The farcical romantic comedy centers around Carey (Kyle Marvin) who, after the unexpected break-up with his wife Ashley (Adria Arjona), literally runs away to take up refuge with his best friend Paul (Michael Angelo Covino who also co-wrote the screenplay and directs) and Julie (Dakota Johnson). Learning the pair have an open relationship causes Carey to reevaluate his life, and his choice to sleep with Julie creates consequences for all involved.

Following the events at Willow Hill, authorities look to capture the escaped residents while Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Gomez (Luis Guzmán) will realize that two of them are connected to their past. Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) awakes from a coma to find Enid (Emma Myers) in danger, Tyler (Hunter Doohan) on the loose (leading to a questionable plan to bring him to heel), and former-principal Weems (Gwendoline Christie) acting as her new, and not very supportive, spirit guide. Pieces from the first half of the season begin to fall into place as Pugsley‘s (Isaac Ordonez) zombie becomes human enough to identify and a connection is revealed between the unknown woman Wednesday freed from Willow Hill and both Tyler and Wednesday’s mother.

The Sandman – The Song of Orpheus / Family Blood

Guilty over recent events, Morpheus (Tom Sturridge) makes up with his sister Delirium (Esmé Creed-Miles) and this time earnestly sets out to find their missing brother. While successful, leading to a meeting with Destruction (Barry Sloane), that’s not the family reunion that is the most memorable. For Dream, its the unexpected crossing of paths with his estranged son Orpheus (Ruairi O’Connor ) that allows for a look back at the dream lord’s past and the tragedy of his son. Orpheus’ backstory is most notable for his song to Hades (Garry Cooper) and Persephone (Antonia Desplat) and for the return of Jenna Coleman (albeit reprising the lesser interesting of the two Constantine women she’s played on the show – something which will be rectified in the next episode).
