Secret Six #5

The first thing you notice about Secret Six #5 is the art has changed considerably with Roger Cruz taking over for Stephen Segovia. The second thing you notice is there is no Catman in this issue. Neither of these things is an improvement.

Secret Six #5 catches up with Deadshot, Dreamer, and Black Alice being the “guests” of Checkmate where they also find Amanda Waller and have a second go-round with Jeannette after her failed attempt to get the trio to join in and help Checkmate with their own plans for Waller. We also get a bit more detail on just what Dreamer did to the woman (and why Checkmate wants her alive).

Phineas and Ferb – Dry Another Day

  • Title: Phineas and Ferb – Dry Another Day

Attempting to beat the heat, Phineas (Vincent Martella) and Ferb (David Errigo Jr.) build a giant ice luge wheel which they roll around town with Isabella (Alyson Stoner), Baljeet (Maulik Pancholy), and Buford (Bobby Gaylor) which not only cools them off but leaves a cool breeze for all who pass. Of course Candace (Ashley Tisdale) attempts to catch them but, as always, is a step too slow (although she does earn a momentary second of fame skiing after the boys). The Doofenshmirtz (Dan Povenmire) plot, involving the villain attempting to dump his oil in a water park, isn’t a strong, and somehow makes even less sense than usual, but the two stories do eventually collide at the water park.

Heads of State

  • Title: Heads of State

Heads of State is a particularly dumb action-comedy starring John Cena and Idris Elba as the President of the United States and the Prime Minister of Britain who must put their mutual animosity aside when a terrorist organization attempts to kill them as part of a larger conspiracy to destroy NATO. We also get Priyanka Chopra Jonas as a MI6 officer, and former flame to the British Prime Minister, who eventually teams up with the pair in an attempt to get both of them to Italy alive. The most interesting moment of the entire film comes in the form of a montage flashback sequence explaining how she caught up with them which, from the looks of it, would have made a far better film than the one we got.

Throwback Thursday takes us back 30 years to writer/director Amy Heckerling adaption of Jane Austen’s Emma through a valley girl filter which is now available on a new 30th Anniversary Edition 4K. The results are quite entertaining. A touchstone for the 90s, especially for those who grew up with the film, Clueless stars Alicia Silverstone as Cher, a rich and popular high school student whose materialistic world view will be challenged over the course of the film in a failed romance with the obviously gay Christian (Justin Walker), a makeover of new student Tai (Brittany Murphy) that blows up in her face, and the discovery that she’s developed feelings for her older stepbrother (Paul Rudd).
