Green Lanterns #20

Green Lanterns #20 comic reviewA poor man’s Magneto, Doctor Polaris isn’t exactly an A-list DC villain. That said, writer Sam Humphries and artist Eduardo Pansica put the character to good use here as the emotionally unstable super-villain fights to save his dying brother. Trapped by the villain deep below the surface of the Earth, it’s Jessica Cruz that saves both herself and her partner Simon Baz and the series continues the trend of making Jessica the far more interesting half of the duo as she’s able to focus her will far better than her more experienced partner.

One released from their prison, the Green Lanterns work together (with a little help from a Justice League teammate) to track down Doctor Polaris. While there’s not a lot of action here, there’s an interesting story going on inside Polaris’ fractured mind.

The Great Films – 12 Angry Men

12 Angry Men movie reviewOur Throwback Thursday post this week takes us back six decades. On this date 60 years ago writer Reginald Rose‘s adaptation of his own teleplay opened in theaters. Directed by Sidney Lumet, the film was nominated for three Oscars yet took home none. However, over time both the National Film Registry and the American Film Institute have named it a film of great significance.

Set entirely in a courthouse, the film follows the deliberations of 12 jurors concerning a case of an 18 year-old accused of stabbing his father with a switchblade. When the film opens only one lone juror (Henry Fonda) has some doubt to the boy’s guilt. While going over the case with the reluctant other jurors, the man will slowly bring others to his side, to the great frustration of one juror (Lee J. Cobb) spearheading the other argument.

No names are used, with each of the jurors identified only by number, and others identified solely as “the boy,” “the judge,” and so on. Focusing on facts and deliberation, the film is tense throughout (although there’s only a single instance where any physical threat is made by one juror to another).

iZombie - Zombie Knows Best TV review

One of the goofier episodes for Liv (Rose McIver) and Major (Robert Buckley) turns out to be one of the most dramatic for Babineaux (Malcolm Goodwin). Helping the detective with the double-murder, Liv and Major chow down on the brains of a father and his teenage daughter causing all kinds of bizarre behavior among the group. Buckley may have missed his calling, as he’s terrific as the self-absorbed teenage girl. The case eventually uncovers a seedy motive for the crime involving the girl’s best friend and her screwed-up home life.

Star Wars #30

Star Wars #30 comic reviewLed by the journals of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker‘s journey takes him to an unnamed planet in the Vagadarr System where he will cross paths with Garro, who still holds a grudge for Yoda‘s interference on the world decades before. Seeing Yoda’s adventures in flashbacks, the Jedi Master uses the Force to restore balance to the planet by reanimating the Giants of Living Stone.

Fueled by years of bitterness since the Jedi Master left, Garro has seen his world transformed in ways he never imagined and decides to take that anger out on Luke, hoping to strip the pilot (who he mistakes for Yoda’s student) of his power to finish off the rock creatures and restore order to his world.
