State and Main DVD review

It’s about purity. We’ll double-down on Throwback Thursday this week to take a quick look at David Mamet‘s underrated 2000 comedy State and Main in which a movie set is forced to relocate to the sleepy town of Waterford, Vermont when their star’s (Alec Baldwin) love of underage girls gets them thrown out of New Hampshire. Immensely entertaining and highly quotable, this one never fails to make me laugh.

Go you Huskies. Featuring an amazing cast, Mamet gives us Philip Seymour Hoffman as the playwright turned screenwriter, William H. Macy as the film’s director, Baldwin and Sarah Jessica Parker as the film’s stars, and Rebecca Pidgeon, Clark Gregg, and Julia Stiles as townies. All turn out to be perfect fits for Mamet’s quick dialogue that takes equal swipes at Hollywood and small town life but still finds ways to celebrate each.

Everybody needs a hobby. The conflict in the film comes from the dysfunction of the set, the uproar the movie folks have on the town (in both positive and negative ways), and their star’s latest dalliance which puts the entire project in jeopardy.

The Flash - Borrowing Problems from the Future TV review

There’s a good episode at the heart of “Borrowing Problems from the Future,” it’s just unfortunate we have to wade through 20 minutes of Barry (Grant Gustin) being a complete dick to get to it. Troubled by seeing Iris (Candice Patton) killed by Savitar in the near-future, Barry struggles with how to try and prevent the events from coming to pass. His aggression gets taken out on Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) who is finally allowed to strut his stuff as Kid Flash. Once all cards are on the table, “Borrowing Problems from the Future” can begin actually deal with (and attempt to change) the future while teasing us what else may be in store for the show during the second-half of this season.

Batman - The Ring of Wax / Give 'Em the Axe TV review

For Throwback Thursday we take a look back at another episode of the classic 1966 Batman TV-series starring Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin. Wax is the name of the game in this two-parter which features the return of the Riddler (Frank Gorshin) who smuggles in a new Universal Wax Solvent into the country inside a wax replica of himself. After causing a scene at the Gotham wax museum, the Riddler makes off with his prize which he plans to put to good use. Following clues left at the scene of the crime, the Dynamic Duo head to the public library where they run into a very sticky situation (so to speak). The next time Batman and Robin catch up with the Riddler things don’t go any better as they are left hanging over a vat of boiling wax in the cliffhanger scene.

Beyond - Fancy Meeting You Here TV review

“Fancy Meeting You Here” offers likely the final appearance of Emilija Baranac as Holden‘s (Burkely Duffield) new crush Jaime as a double date with Luke (Jonathan Whitesell) and his girlfriend (Jacky Lai) ends in another of coma boy’s freak-out sessions. While one door opens, a car accident following his meltdown jump-starts his memory and pushes Holden back into the arms of Willa (Dilan Gwyn), although still unaware of her true motivations. His desire to not return to the Realm and rash decision to end the episode is likely going to have consequences for both of them next week.
