Detective Comics #940

Detective Comics #940“Rise of the Batmen” concludes with our team of heroes taking down the Colony thanks to the quick thinking, and risk taking, of Red Robin who makes himself the target of all the Colony’s drones. His sacrifice saves the lives of hundreds in the city, but to do so Tim Drake will have to make the ultimate sacrifice… or so it would appear.

Detective Comics #940 allows Tim to go out in a blaze of glory while showcasing his loss to both Batman and Spoiler. Even if the epilogue clues readers in on the fact that our hero was transported out before his death, and is now the prisoner of an unknown enemy, as far as his teammates know Red Robin made his last stand. As big heroic sacrifices go, this one works pretty damn well.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - Meet the New Boss

Continuing to lay the groundwork for later episodes, “Meet the New Boss” is most notable for introducing Jeffrey Mace (Jason O’Mara) as the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Along with filling us in that the job could have been Coulson’s if he wanted it, the latest episode also reveals a good working relationship between the two men (which could be tested in the next few weeks). While the government inspection of the S.H.I.E.L.D. facility provides most of the episode’s humor, and allows Coulson to geek out when called up, it takes up quite a bit of air time without offering any immediate payoff (other than to suggest O’Mara’s character is based on the comic character of the same name).

Longmire - One Good Memory

“One Good Memory” wraps up the search for Donna (Ally Walker). Despite tracking down Walker Browning (Callum Rennie), and further infuriating the Cumberland Sheriff (Tom Wopat) in the process, as well as identifying the person (Mac Brandt) responsible for fire-bombing the doctor’s car, the true culprit (Carrie Lazar) proves to have complicated motives for kidnapping the psychiatrist. By the end of the episode Donna will be safe leaving Walt to deal with other problems (such as his pending lawsuit) over the remainder of the season.
