Mockingbird #6

Mockingbird #6Chasing some questionable intelligence, and removing herself from the circus of Hawkeye‘s upcoming trial, Mockingbird boards a super-hero-themed cruise ship where the source’s need for secrecy, an encounter with a former boyfriend, and a murder all stand in the way of Bobbi finding what she seeks.

Mockingbird #6 finds a way to tie-in the events of Civil War II without forcing the reader to know more than the basics about Marvel’s latest big event. The series continues its goofy style with the latest issue, complete with a Corgi convention on the same cruise line and Bobbi’s consistent struggle to find any useful information on a boat headed straight for the Bermuda Triangle (and likely even more trouble).

Killjoys - Full Metal Monk

Keeping Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) and Johnny (Aaron Ashmore) on their own separate storylines, “Full Metal Monk” sends Dutch and D’Avin (Luke Macfarlane) in search of another secret facility while Johnny and Pawter (Sarah Power) get into even more trouble snooping into the secrets of the wall. While both will find answers to what the company plans for Westerley, the cost proves much higher for Johnny and Pawter who find themselves trapped behind the wall which begins to force the entire populace into a more compliant state.

Batgirl and the Birds of Prey #1

Batgirl and the Birds of Prey #1Following the events of Batgirl and the Birds of Prey: Rebirth #1, Batgirl and Black Canary chase down Huntress whose vengeance over mobsters has criss-crossed their search into the new criminal Oracle. The comic’s events turn the adversaries into reluctant partners in the search for both Oracle and Fenice (whose snake soldiers are likely to give the gals trouble over the next few issues).

I really wanted to like this issue but there’s simply too much that doesn’t work for me starting with the art of Claire Roe and ending with the implausibly quick turnaround for Babs and Dinah to align themselves with a murderer. Throw in the fact that apparently none of their secret identities is actually secret and the comic’s lead arc is off to a very shaky start.

Castle - The Complete Eighth Season

Castle limps to the finish line in its final season which separates the show’s couple by installing Beckett (Stana Katic) behind a desk and pushing Castle (Nathan Fillion) into the field as a private detective, often with the assistance of Alexis (Molly C. Quinn) and/or new recurring character Hayley Shipton (Toks Olagundoye).

Limiting Castle and Beckett’s time on-screen in several episodes removes much of the show’s trademark chemistry leading to a very up-and-down final season. The season is also saddled with another grand season-long conspiracy that is not fully resoloved. That said, Castle and Alexis’ father-daughter bonding proves entertaining and there is some fun to be had when Caskett is allowed to solve a few cases together.
