Houdini & Doyle - The Curse of Korzha

“The Curse of Korzha” is the first episode of Houdini & Doyle I have watched. Jumping into the middle of a show’s First Season can be problematic as you are unaware of the character and world building already accomplished to this point in the series. Set in 1901 London, the series centers around a consulting detective partnership between author Arthur Conan Doyle (Stephen Mangan) and magician Harry Houdini (Michael Weston). In the vein of The X-Files, the pair investigate mysterious incidents where one (Houdini) seeks a rational explanation while the other (Doyle) is open to the possibility that the supernatural is real.

The Shadow: The Death of Margo Lane #1

The Shadow: The Death of Margo Lane #1As with many crimefighters, The Shadow relies on one trusted associate above all others. What happens when that association puts his sidekick (for lack of a better term) in jeopardy? That’s the crux of the matter in Dynamite Entertainment’s new five-issue mini-series The Shadow: The Death of Margo Lane written and drawn by Matt Wagner.

Despite the gruesome title, no harm comes to Margo Lane in this first issue (presented from Margo’s point of view rather than that of The Shadow). Setting up the mini-series new villain known as the Red Empress whose power over the city continues to grow, the Shadow and Margo search both at home and abroad for answers about who their new adversary is and why they have chosen to kidnap a woman for the sole purpose to force a confrontation with The Shadow.

Green Arrow: Rebirth #1

Green Arrow: Rebirth #1Seizing on the mission statement of DC Universe: Rebirth #1 of returning more of the classic feel to both characters and the DCU, Green Arrow: Rebirth #1 returns Oliver Queen to Seattle (rather than Star City) and rekindles a romance forgotten by the New 52.

While investigating a series of disappearances, mostly by the homeless, Green Arrow encounters Black Canary on the trail of an underground human trafficking ring selling those who will not be missed to the highest bidder. Still new to each other, there’s an obvious chemistry between the pair and a promise of things to come. With a costume redesign that purposefully makes you think of Arrow, Green Arrow reclaims some of his old liberal swagger and classic goatee. Dinah’s clothes remind you of her classic costume while still being a bit updated for the times.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

Popstar: Never Stop Never StoppingLet’s face it, if you are paying to see Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping you know going in exactly what you are getting. Written by The Lonely Island Trio Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone, the celebrity mockumentary is variations of one joke stretched to 86 minutes. Lampooning celebrity by highlighting former boy band singer Connor4Real (Samberg) turned solo star adjusting to the unexpected criticism of his new album, it takes shots at everything from vapid celebrities to the media obsessed with them.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping isn’t a great movie. Like it’s lead character, it lacks the brains or ambition to make the most out of its talent. That said, even over-stuffed with real-life celebrities playing themselves and jibes at TMZ, the movie does produce several humorous moments. Not all the jokes land but enough do to to keep the train rolling. An 86-minute running time might seem rather short, but for a script with so little to say it’s actually a tad long.

The film’s creators bring their music parody skills to bear here. However all of Connor’s songs, both the hits and horrific misfires, all sound pretty much the same (bad and ridiculous). That’s a problem when the entire plot hinges on some being vastly better than others.
