The InternNancy MeyersThe Intern is a fun, if lightweight, affair casting Robert De Niro as the unlikely new intern at an online fashion company who, of course, turns out to be the perfect man for the job. Immediately loved by everyone else in the company, it takes longer for the company’s CEO (Anne Hathaway) to take to the firm’s newest employee.

The Intern succeeds mainly on the likability of its stars, although the script gets into trouble with an ill-conceived heist sequence and a rather awful girl’s night out hotel bonding sequence between the pair late in the film.

Also troubling is that for the smart, successful businesswoman Hathaway portrays she’s incapable of making the easiest (and most obvious) decision in the entire movie which she needs the help of not one but two men (both her intern/new best friend and her less-than-trustworthy cheating husband portrayed by Anders Holm) to make for her.

Elementary - Hounded

Elementary continues to make interesting choices when putting their own spin on characters and stories created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. With “Hounded” the show tackles likely the most famous case of Sherlock Holmes‘ (Jonny Lee Miller) career: “The Hound of the Baskervilles.” Like Sherlock, Elementary chooses a modern interpretation on the story by having the hound itself be something completely unexpected. The story here begins with the death of a jogger, chased by a malevolent glowing giant dog into traffic. When the only other heir (Tom Everett Scott) to the vast Baskerville estate begins being haunted by the same creature Holmes and Watson (Lucy Liu) are on the case.

Once Upon a Time - Labor of Love

While stumbling around a very Storybooke-esque version of the Underworld in their search for Hook (Colin O’Donoghue), who is now a captive of Hades (Greg Germann) and being guarded by the three-headed Cerberus, Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) will seek out the help of an old friend who has unfinished business with the creature. Offering us flashbacks to the young Snow’s (Bailee Madison) first encounter with Hercules (Jonathan Whitesell) we see the crucial role the demigod performed in putting the young princess on a path to becoming a hero – a service Snow reciprocates here by helping the fallen warrior complete his final labor and move on to Olympus.

Black Widow #1

Black Widow #1The first issue of Mark Waid and Chris Samnee’s new Black Widow series sets the stage with Natasha Romanova being chased out of S.H.I.E.L.D. Heavy on action but light on dialogue, Black Widow #1 doesn’t tell us what the Black Widow has stolen from the Marvel Universe’s premiere spy agency but it does demonstrate how determined Maria Hill‘s agents are to get it back.

Certainly not an Avengers’ comic, Black Widow #1 is a well-paced collaboration between Waid’s storytelling and Samnee’s art. The entire issue is one extended chase sequence featuring the Avenger’s escape first from S.H.I.E.L.D.’s facility and the following pursuit. The mystery works in the issue’s favor, but I’ll be curious to see how the story moves forward once some of these initial questions are answered.
