Person of Interest - Asylum

Pushing forward to what looks like it could be the show’s bleakest season finale yet “Asylum” offers three stories, each of which end badly for our heroes. Given the numbers of both Elias (Enrico Colantoni) and Dominic (Winston Duke), Reese (Jim Caviezel) attempts once again to stop a gang war from fully erupting only to find himself captured along with Elias and Fusco (Kevin Chapman) by the Brotherhood. Control (Camryn Manheim) gets her own subplot as, after finally realizing the truth about Samaritan, continues to root out the computer’s spies within her organization only to learn what Samaritan has planned. And after receiving a phone call confirming Shaw (Sarah Shahi) is still alive and a captive of Decima Technologies, Root (Amy Acker) and Finch (Michael Emerson) walk into a trap forcing The Machine into an impossible choice.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Despite the build-up to an Infinity War Avengers film, Marvel Studio threw everyone for a loop when they announced fascist robot Ultron (James Spader) would be the villain of The Avengers sequel. Unlike 2012’s The Avengers which was the culmination and payoff for the entirety of Marvel’s Phase One films (everything from Iron Man to Captain America: The First Avenger), Avengers: Age of Ultron suffers from some of the same problems that weighed down Iron Man 2.

Not only does the film have to introduce a brand-new villain (something The Avengers didn’t have to spend time on) and three new supporting characters (with vastly different origins than their comic counterparts), and weave in ongoing events from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. while providing separate in-depth character moments for every single Avenger, Age of Ultron also has to lay the groundwork for the next two Avengers films, Captain America: Civil War, and Thor: Ragnarok. While also throwing in supporting characters from pretty much every Marvel film so far it’s something of a marvel, if you’ll forgive the pun, that Avengers: Age of Ultron doesn’t buckle under its own considerable weight.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - The Dirty Half Dozen

The final episode leading up the Avengers: Age of Ultron is only peripherally connected to opening scenes of the film but it does (finally) wind down the S.H.I.E.L.D. vs. S.H.I.E.L.D. storyline (hopefully for good), and, if only for a single episode, reunites Coulson‘s (Clark Gregg) entire team for a suicide mission against HYDRA. Exchanging Fury’s box of secrets to Gonzales (Edward James Olmos) for the chance to lead his team to rescue Deathlok (J. August Richards) and cripple HYDRA’s enhanced soldier program, Coulson gathers together his former team including Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) and Skye (Chloe Bennet) who shows up to help save Lincoln (Luke Mitchell) based on the intelligence offered by Raina‘s (Ruth Negga) visions.
