Novocaine

  • Title: Novocaine

Novocaine is an odd film that starts out as an awkward romantic comedy, turns sharply into a Heat-esque serious hardcore heist film, and then for the remainder becomes an adrenaline-fueled action film which could only be compared to something like Crank. It’s one of those films where the wild antics don’t so much take over the story but, for the majority of the film, simply are the story. At times, it’s a bit much for my tastes and could have taken more opportunity to pull back and let its actors (who are doing a good job) breathe.

The Day The Earth Blew Up

  • Title: The Day The Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie

Your nostalgia for classic Looney Tunes cartoons may influence your enjoyment in The Day The Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie. Warner Bros., who has owned the various properties since the 1940s, hasn’t had the best luck in adapting characters from the animated shorts into full features over the years. The latest, and first (not counting the Space Jam sequel) in over 20 years, casts Daffy Duck and Porky Pig (both voiced by Eric Bauza) as brothers out to save their home from threats such as the H.O.A. and aliens. Honestly, the H.O.A. is the scarier of the two antagonists (although the aliens allow for things to get quite wacky over the second-half of the film).

The Great Race

Throwback Thursday takes us to the most expensive comedy ever made at the time it was released and featured what has come to be known as the greatest pie fight ever captured on-screen. With 1965’s The Great Race director Blake Edwards (known for his over-the-top comedies) delivers his love letter to silent films in a battle of good and evil across the globe. Edwards fills, one might even suggest overfills, the film with silent movie gags and tropes including a ballroom brawl, sword fights, characters mistaken for lookalikes, slapstick and cartoonish humor (including the villains blowing up), and running gags.

Darkwing Duck #1

A new Darkwing Duck comic kicks off here with part one of a twelve-part storyline involving Darkwing Duck, shortly after his adoption of Gosalyn, searching for an arch-nemesis… and also fighting crime. In Darkwing Duck #1 we get Darkwing taking on Megavolt who has stolen a super-battery and heads to the carnival to charge it leading to a run-in with Launchpad and Gosalyn (who should be in bed). Despite the “Year One” moniker, the comic is taking place after Darkwing, Launchpad, and Gosalyn are brought together and after he’s had multiple run-ins with super-villains (even if he still has to remind them of his name). Still, it’s a fun early adventure for the character.

Reacher – Dominique

  • Title: Reacher – Dominique
  • IMDb: link

“There are very few people you meet in life that do everything right. The way they think, attack problems, conduct themselves. How they keep things loose when a joke is needed or keep their powder dry when things get tight.”

While playing on recent events, the majority of “Dominique” focuses on an extended flashback which introduces the impressive Sergeant First Class Dominique Kohl (Mariah Robinson) who worked under Reacher before his Special Investigators phase. The pair’s first case involved a soldier (Johnathan Sousa) leaking military secrets under threat from a military intelligence officer targeting his family. That officer’s name was Xavier Quinn (Brian Tee).
