The Replacements

The ReplacementsDespite being nearly old enough to drive (the film was released in theaters in 2000), The Replacements hadn’t been available on Blu-ray until now. Based very loosely on the 1987 NFL strike, the script by Vince McKewin centered around a ragtag group of replacement players for the Washington Sentinels (a fictional stand-in for the Redskins). Keanu Reeves stars as college star and NFL bust Shane Falco who is given a second chance by Jimmy McGinty (Gene Hackman) who assembles his team from a hodgepodge of unknowns.

Playing on various underdog themes The Replacements isn’t that far removed from a number of sports movies (most notable Necessary Roughness which follows a very similar plot at the college level). Joining Reeves on the football field are Jon Favreau (as the character most likely to kill someone on the field), Orlando Jones (as the bigmouth wide receiver), Faizon Love, Michael Jace, Michael Taliferro, David Denman, and Rhys Ifans.

Powerpuff Girls: Super Smash-Up! #1

Powerpuff Girls: Super Smash-Up!Spinning out of events from Super Secret Crisis War the first issue of the new Powerpuff Girls series introduces the idea of Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttecup jumping realities to have unusual team-ups throughout the various Cartoon Network interconnected worlds. Opening with the girls defeating Fuzzy Lumpkinsattempt to kidnap Miss Bellum (by showcasing a bizarre new power) and a visit to Dexter’s Laboratory that ends in a mutated DeeDee jumping through a portal, the first episode is largely a set-up for the premise (while allowing Professor Utonium to geek out over someone else’s lab for a change).

Personally I’d prefer a solo Powerpuff Girls series but it seems IDW is more interested in growing the comic brand of the various Cartoon Network characters. Team-up books are a bit iffy as some of the various rotating guest-stars are likely to interest some readers more than others. I also have to wonder with the Powerpuff Girls traveling through other dimension whether we’ll get to see much of the various Townsville villains in the series? For fans.

[IDW, $3.99]

Battlestar Galactica – Saga of a Star World

“Fleeing from the Cylon tyranny, the last battlestar, Galactica, leads a rag-tag fugitive fleet on a lonely
quest…a shining planet known as Earth.”

Battlestar Galactica - Saga of a Star WorldIt was the TV-movie that started it all. Born from the mind of Glen A. Larson, “Saga of a Star World” premiered in 1978 as the most expensive television pilot of its time (it was even released theatrically to help make back some of the cost). A Wagon Train to the stars, Battlestar Galactica began with the fall of the human race to their robotic enemies the Cylons. The lone surviving warship, Galactica, would lead a ragtag fleet of the remainder of tweleve tribes of humanity looking for a lost colony known as Earth.

While not every episode of the series is a winner, “Saga of a Star World” holds up remarkably well more than 35 years later. The practical special effects, particularly the dog fights have aged better than modern CGI used in movies and TV series decades later. Despite the more dramatic themes of the later reboot of the franchise, I still prefer the look and style of the original when it comes to the (extremely cool) Cylons and their ships, and the uniforms and Viper fighters of the Colonial Warriors.
