Transporter: The Series - Sharks

As a means of enjoyment for those with far too much money and time on their hands Frank Martin (Chris Vance) is one of three drivers hired to deliver a briefcase of cash from Paris to Marseilles. Raising the stakes is the fact that news of each courier has reached groups more than willing to kill to get their hands on even one of the briefcases. And throwing a further wrench into the proceedings is Juliet (Delphine Chanéac) who uses her wiles to join one of the other drivers in the competition all in order to get close to Frank.

Star Wars Rebels - Breaking Ranks

Working undercover for weeks in an Imperial Academy, Ezra (Taylor Gray) caries the bulk of this week’s episode leaving the other members of the Ghost mostly sidelined or as support waiting to spring into action. Even the episode’s B-story involving Kanan (Freddie Prinze Jr.) and Hera (Vanessa Marshall) on an unrelated attack on an Imperial supply run is more about how each reacts the kid’s solo mission that the immediate danger facing them. While offering a glimpse into the early lives of those who become Stormtroopers and Imperial Officers, “Breaking Ranks” also introduces several new characters who I’d expect we’ll be seeing again.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #8

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #8You know what they say about the best laid plans. Despite the effort the team spent in recovering the Vampyr tome from Dracula and locking it up safe in Xander and Spike‘s new apartment, the roomies discover the book has been taken by Andrew back to the giant gaping hole which was once Sunnydale (the site of a Burning Man-style celebration on Halloween) in order to fix a mistake.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #8 works by obscuring the true motives of Andrew for multiple pages while allowing the Scoobies to fear the worst. Andrew’s guilt to bring back Jonathan makes sense, but it’s that final panel which suggests an unexpected return of a fan favorite that will likely get fans in a frenzy and have huge ramification for everyone involved.

The B-story involving a de-powered Old One with a very personal grudge against Slayers hunting Buffy isn’t as interesting, but I’m willing to see where it leads (especially as long as the main story continues to deliver). Worth a look.

[Dark Horse, $3.50]

Interstellar

InterstellarIf Christopher Nolan‘s sci-fi end-of-the-world epic feels a bit familiar it is. Borrowing obviously from 2001: A Space Odyssey and the recent success of an astronaut stranded in space in Gravity (both far better films), Interstellar showcases both Nolan’s strengths and weaknesses of the director when his subject matter lacks the originality of his best films.

An ambitious project to be sure, Interstellar‘s B-movie plot seemingly ripped straight out of 1950s sci-fi can only lead it so far. The strength of its cast can’t cover up the flaws in the nearly three-hour project whose length also effects the director’s decreasingly-effective bag-of-tricks such as the loud music blasts which may have worked in Inception but come off distracting and disorienting even obscuring dialogue in several scenes.

As a movie experience Interstellar has merit and is worth seeing. As a complete film experience I found it wanting and would compare it to the eerily similar Signs. M. Night Shamalan‘s equally ambitious project relied too strongly on performance, far-too-cute coincidences, and late twists (over a well-developed story) as well.

Scorpion - Father's Day

While Paige (Katharine McPhee) deals with the unexpected return of Ralph’s (Riley B. Smith) father (Brendan Hines), something each member of the team decides to weigh-in on, Walter (Elyes Gabel) and the group investigate the prison break involving a borderline-genius hacker and two members of the Russian mob who they believe may have kidnapped the computer genius to exploit his code. The true story behind the plan to siphon money off of the stock market is a little more complicated but seeing the “normals” take advantage of a gifted individual and fearing Ralph may suffer the same fate causes Walter to dwell on his own betrayals.
