Kill the Messenger

Kill the MessengerBased on accounts written by Nick Schou and Gary Webb, Kill the Messenger offers a rather one-sided look at San Jose Mercury News reporter Gary Webb’s (Jeremy Renner) investigation and publishing of a story concerning the CIA supporting the cocaine smuggling of Nicaraguan Contra Rebels and the sale of those drugs inside the United States.

After a brief set-up introducing Webb’s family and co-workers, the movie follows his journey uncovering the biggest story of his career, the initial success garnered by its publication, and his quick fall from grace as the media at large began to poke holes in the story (which the script suggests were at the behest of the CIA and the United States Government).

When Kill the Messenger is focused on the story itself it works well. When the focus shifts to Webb’s decline, making him, rather than his work, the story (going against the overall message of the movie), it starts to falter down dark conspiracies and paranoia. Unwilling to see the gloom to its inevitable conclusion the script by Peter Landesman simply stops offering an ultimately unsatisfying ending.

Arrow - Calm

Season Three starts with Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) finally at peace. Despite the death of his mother and the disappearance of his sister, Oliver’s life is back on track with Roy (Colton Haynes) taking on his new role of Arsenal helping gel the team into a cohesive unit. Captain Lance (Paul Blackthorne) not only has his old job back but a fancy new promotion which allows him to force the Starling City police force to officially recognize their hooded hero. Properly title “Calm,” the good times don’t last as the storm clouds on the horizon start rolling in leaving one member of Oliver’s extended family dead, another in the hospital, and any hope of Oliver getting control of his company or beginning a relationship with Felicity in ashes.

Batman ’66 #15

Batman '66 #15When the Penguin teams up with the Black Widow and literally traps the Caped Crusaders in the spider’s web it’s up to Batman‘s quick thinking to play on the Penguin’s insecurities and get the villain to switch sides before all is lost.

In another nice mix of action and camp (the citizens of Gotham actually help the police track down money blowing through the streets from the villains’ bank robbery), the latest issue puts a more comic book spin on a villain who only made a single appearance on the television show in one two-part episode.

Guardians 3000 #1

Guardians 3000 #1Continuing the back-up story from Guardians of the Galaxy #14, Marvel’s original team of Guardians continue their adventures in the alternate future of the Marvel Universe where the Badoon are overruning the galaxy and leaving very little left alive in their wake.

Taking a page from Edge of Tomorrow (which coincidentally hits shelves this week on Blu-ray and DVD), the Guardians and their new charge find themselves reliving slight variations of the same day’s events as the group attempt to warn their remaining supporters about a disruption to the timeline which Geena Drake is somehow the key to fixing.

Once the time loop is broken it will be interesting to see which versions of Vance Astro, Charlie-27, Martinex, Yondu, and Starhawk the comic leaves us with (I’m hoping for the starry-version of Starhawk). Although I’m not overjoyed with some of the heavy ‘roid rage action scenes by Gerardo Sandoval, it’s fun to see these characters back in action once more. Worth a look.
