Powerpuff Girls #8

Powerpuff Girls #8The second-half of the “Monster Day” begins with the Powerpuff Girls defeated and dejected in their room and Steve‘s monster swarm destroying the city of Townsville and preparing for the night’s final festivities: eating the Mayor! Getting the kick in the butt they need from Professor Utonium, Bubbles comes up with a plan to even the odds by taking control of the remaining Mojobots and leading them into battle against the monster horde.

Although the Girls suffered momentary defeat at the end of last issue, Powerpuff Girls #8 allows the threesome to return with a force thanks to a little fatherly push and a brainstorm by my favorite member of the group. Once again the day is saved by the Powerpuff Girls, but despite the monsters eventual defeat Steve’s reign continues as his subjects admit that this has been the best day ever (meaning, if the comic stays around long enough, we may get another Monster Day somewhere down the line). The lastest issue delivers on action, wackiness, and a nice message about never giving up no matter the odds. Worth a look.

The investigation into the bombing of a bus stop planned to kill only a single victim leads the FBI to look into the case of a death row inmate (Oscar Torre) who the recent victim was trying to get released from prison before his schedule execution in only three days time. Tracking down the woman (Angelique Cabral) hired by a private eye to steal the victim’s briefcase seconds before the explosion doesn’t deliver any hard answers but does lead Abbot (Rockmond Dunbar) to suspect the proof the victim was gathering to stop the state of Texas from executing an innocent man must have been worth killing for.

The Counselor

The CounselorDespite the talent of director Ridley Scott, screenwriter Cormac McCarthy and an all-star cast, The Counselor is a mess. To be sure it’s a well-acted and well-produced mess with stand-out scenes, but it’s a mess none the less. The movie’s major flaw, other than McCarthy attempting to over-think a drug deal gone bad, is the less-than-believable dialogue from several of the film’s stars who come off as reading lines they haven’t quite fully bought into rather than delivering it naturally from the the mouths of fully-embodied characters.

Michael Fassbender stars as a character only ever referred to as “the Counselor,” a lawyer who makes the bad decision to get into the drug smuggling trade only to put the lives of himself, a friend (Javier Bardem), associate (Brad Pitt), and his beautiful fiance (Penélope Cruz) in danger.

Unfortunately for the Counselor, his friend’s crazy girlfriend (Cameron Diaz) has her own plan for the drugs, leaving everyone else to take the fall after executing her plans from the shadows.

“There are Pretenders among us. Geniuses with the ability to become anyone they want to be. In 1963, a corporation known as the Centre isolated a young Pretender named Jarod and exploited his genius for their research. Then one day, their Pretender ran away…”

The Pretender - Pilot

Premiering in the Fall of 1996, The Pretender was a new take on the man-on-the-run premise with the wrongfully chased hero stopping along the way every week to help those in need. The show cast Michael T. Weiss as Jarod, a genius with the ability to adapt to any situation and in a short amount of time pick up the skills necessary to perform any profession he puts his mind to from doctor to race car driver. The “Pilot” episode finds a newly-escaped Jarod on the run from The Centre, a shadowy think tank which procured Jarod as a child through questionable means and use his genius for decades for equally questionable ends.
