Batman: Black and White #5

Batman: Black and White #5Offering another quintet of black and white Batman tales, Batman: Black and White #5 is anchored by a Two-Face story from Len Wein and artist Victor Ibáñez which features a complicated two-pronged attack, misdirection, and an appearance of Nightwing in his pre-New 52 costume (complete with the fan appreciated finger stripes).

“Hell Night” from Ivan Brandon gives us Batman on one brutal night (with a late twist I don’t quite buy) and beautiful art by Paolo Manuel Rivera. Blair Butler and Chris Weston offer a bizarre story featuring the death of the Caped Crusader (sort of), and Jimmy Palmiotti and artist Andrew Robinson give us a story featuring Bruce Wayne mostly out of the Batsuit finding his “super-power” (but when he does appear as Batman it’s in the classic costume complete with the yellow ellipse Bat symbol).

Although I enjoyed the tone of Keith Giffen and Javier Pulido’s “Cat and Mouse” featuring a crook’s version of his encounter with Batman, it’s probably the weakest of this month’s stories. Worth a look.

[DC, $4.99]

The Spoils of Babylon - The Foundling

IFC’s new six-episode mini-series The Spoils of Babylon, written by Matt Piedmont and Andrew Steele, sets out to satirize the ridiculous soap opera nature of TV mini-series of the 70’s and 80’s. Boasting an all-star cast, the first episode, with an intro by the show’s creator Eric Jonrosh (Will Ferrell), introduces us to Devon Morehouse (Tobey Maguire) and his adopted family (Tim Robbins, Kristen Wiig) who strike it rich in oil just as the bank is set to foreclose on the last remnants of the Morehouse clan’s once impressive real estate empire.

“I warned you not to let her drink.”

Blind DateNeeding a date for an important business dinner with a prestigious Japanese firm, workaholic Walter Davis (Bruce Willis), against his better judgement, allows his brother (Phil Hartman) to set him up on a blind date. Warned not to get Nadia (Kim Basinger) drunk, Walter doesn’t realize just how crazy his night will get after sharing a few glasses of champagne. By the end of the night Walter is fired, crazed, robbed, his car are best suit are both ruined, and he’s arrested for a violent scene involving Nadia’s psychopathic ex-boyfriend (John Larroquette).

Directed by Blake Edwards, Blind Date is pretty much a one-joke movie as Nadia’s increasingly wild behavior drives Walter further and further over the edge. Despite the worst night of his life, and everything he looses over the course of the evening, Walter falls for Nadia using her weakness to alcohol to win her back from her ex-boyfriend in the film’s final moments after Nadia, blaming herself for the entire night, makes a deal with him to keep Walter out of jail.
