Iron Man 3

Iron Man 3The third time is hardly ever the charm in movie franchises, especially those adapted from comics. Shane Black, who replaces Jon Favreau behind the camera (although Favreau stays on to continue his role as Happy Hogan), delivers a thoroughly satisfying third (and quite possibly final) entry in a way Sam Raimi, Christopher Nolan, Richard Lester, and Brett Ratner all failed to do.

After some rather unsubtle foreshadowing involving Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) meeting with a pair of scientists (Rebecca Hall, Guy Pearce) back in 1999, we catch up some months after the events of The Avengers with a shaken Stark agonizing over the enormity of how much his world has changed since the alien attack that leveled much of New York. While struggling with both anxiety attacks and his relationship with the ever-plucky Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), Stark’s world is further shaken by an attack that leaves Happy severely injured by the hands of a new terrorist calling himself The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley).

Not believing in coincidence, and too well known to hit the casino himself, Oliver has no choice but to send in a determined Felicity to gather more information.

Uncanny X-Men #5

Uncanny X-Men #5After their successful trip to the Jean Grey School School for Higher Learning, CyclopsMagneto, and Emma Frost return to settle in their new recruits (Angel and the Stepford Sisters) and deal with Magik‘s bizarre episode in which she momentarily lost control of her powers and was dragged into Limbo by Dormammu who wants control of the realm. The only thing saves her is the reemergence of her Darkchilde persona.

For those unfamiliar with Magik and the source of her powers (and maybe even for those who know the character well) this new storyline seems like an odd shift in focus from the comic’s original arc. On the plus side the issue has some great character interactions including Cyclops doing his best to reassure Magik, and Angel’s on-the-nose comment about Magneto.

Magik’s inclusion on the team troubled me because I knew storylines like this were a very good possibility. Now with the entire team trapped in Limbo that’s where the comic seems headed for at least the next full issue. For fans.

[Marvel, $3.99]

Bon Jovi – What About Now

Bon Jovi are certainly looking and feeling their age in the video for “What About Now,” the title track off the New Jersey band’s twelfth studio album. From the band that rocked my childhood, the song isn’t so much bad as tired and instantly forgettable. For those interested, you can currently listen to the rest of the album on SoundCloud.
