The Flash #2

the-flash-new-52-2-coverMy reaction the DC’s decision to reboot has been mixed, but I’ve got to say I’ve been pretty happy with Barry Allen’s return as the Flash. I’m still conflicted about how much of the character’s past was wiped away by the New 52 (especially when Barry’s pal Hal Jordan finds his past largely intact), but I’ve got to say I’m really enjoying this title.

Issue #2 continues the storyline about Barry’s missing childhood friend, but much more of this second issue centers around Barry leaning more about his powers. We get our first look at a possible precursor to the Cosmic Treadmill, and the Flash learns to no only act at super-speed but think faster as well.

Once again the art by writer/artist Francis Manapul is exquisite. I love how how Manapul showcases the character’s speed and motion while never loosing sight of who the man underneath the mask is. It’s been a long time since this, or any Flash, has had a title this good. Best of the week.

[DC, $2.99]

Captain America: The First Avenger on Blu-ray

  • Title: Captain America: The First Avenger
  • IMDB: link

captain-america-first-avenger-blu-rayMarvel’s first big budget Captain America film gives us the origin of  Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) through he days in WWII and even his reappearance in present time. Evans is terrific in the role and Captain America: The First Avenger provides just the right mix of action, earnestness, and cheesy sentiment. For more the film itself check out my original review.

The film worked slightly better for me on Blu-ray. The CGI effect of skinny Steve Rogers was more believable and a couple of the sequences I had slight problems with felt more natural the second time around. I still have a few issues with the film including the awkward slow motion jumps Cap makes in front of explosions, the lack of Nazis, the clumsy sequence where our hero gets captured by the Red Skull‘s (Hugo Weaving) men, and the costume still has far too many unnecessary straps.

Annihilators: Earthfall #2

annihilators-earthfall-2-coverThe fight that was promised to us at the end of the first issue is delivered in full here as the team of Annihilators (GladiatorQuasarRonan the AccuserBeta Ray Bill and Ikon the Space Knight) throw down with the Avengers (Iron ManCaptain AmericaSpider-ManWolverineMs. MarvelValkyrie, and the Thing) who have shown up to stop the alien invaders from leveling a Colorado town… by creating more violence and further leveling the Colorado town.

On the plus side the huge amount of property damage eventually reveals the Universal Church of Truth‘s secret base. The teams come to a temporary ceasefire as they are attacked by the Church’s zealots and warriors protecting a secret deep within their once hidden base.

It’s a little cliche to see two groups of heroes get into a brawl over a misunderstanding but the action is pretty good here as the Avengers give it their all but still can’t stop the cosmic guardians. There’s also a humorous moment between Spidey and Quasar when the Web-Head meets Quasar’s space girlfriend.

chuck-versus-the-zoom

As the show returns for its fifth (and sadly final) season we catch up with the newly created Carmichael Industries. Our spies have left the government and set up their own shop as high-priced spies for hire who, as they put it, are still working out some kinks. But that’s not the only change as Chuck (Zachary Levi) is still dealing with the fallout from last season’s finale which saw him stripped of the Intersect and, even more shocking, saw it put in his best friend.
