Gene Colan draws the Batman’s rogues gallery

On Friday we were saddened to learn that artist Gene Colan passed away from complications with liver disease. Although most will remember him for his work on several Marvel titles including Daredevil, Tomb of Dracula, Howard the Duck, and Doctor Strange, (not to mention doing the art for Iron Man #1), I’ll remember Gene Colan most fondly for his work on a DC title in the early-to-mid 1980’s.

During my early years of reading comics Colan took over the artist duties of a title I never missed – Detective Comics. His run climaxed in his second to last issue (Detective Comics #566) in which he was given the opportunity to draw most of Batman’s current Rogues Gallery. Although the story itself was weak (Batman and Robin attempting to decipher a mysterious message by going through Bat-computer files of their most nefarious foes) it did offer Colan to go out on a high note.

Cars 2

  • Title: Cars 2
  • IMDB: link

cars-2-posterLet me get this out of the way first, for those who might not know, I absolutely loved Cars. How much? Enough for the Pixar film to top my Best Movies of 2006 list. I know some who would argue that it the original Cars isn’t among Pixar’s best. They’re wrong. Very, very wrong.

Even though I adore the original, I had a fair amount of misgivings when I heard it was getting a sequel. Face it, the message of the first film was pretty well played out. Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) had made a few new friends and learned something about himself during his short stint in Radiator Springs.

Cars 2 is the biggest shift in story of any of the Pixar’s sequels. The simple story about a star finding peace in a small town is replaced with a level of action and adventure that even puts The Incredibles to shame.

Let’s start with the positives. The film looks great. The different locales (including London, Paris, and the Mediterranean) are expertly rendered. I especially loved how the cars glistened in the bright neon streets of Tokyo.

Flashpoint: Kid Flash Lost (in the Matrix) #1

flashpoint-kid-flash-1-coverSo, Kid Flash is not only lost in the Flashpoint universe, he’s also in the 31st Century. He’s a time traveler, I guess that’ll be okay. And, like Barry Allen he’s disconnected from the Speed Force. Sounds kinda boring, but maybe the story will be good. The 31st Century is ruled by Braniac. Braniac? Sigh, okay. And he’s turned the entire world into The Matrix. Wait, what?

Sigh. We begin with a scene between Barry Allen and Bart that is makes Michael Bay’s Transfromers look subtle in comparision. Given the level of dickishness he’s showing to his grandson it’s obvious what Bart is experiencing isn’t real. I mean, who does this fake Barry think he is, Hal Jordan?

It’s too bad that story isn’t real, because once Kid Flash is pulled into the real world (and starts disappearing) things get even worse. And that’s hard to do when you’ve got an impressive super-villain base filled with killer robots. Of course it’s made infinitely easier if you just steal your plot from The Matrix. Pass.

[DC, $2.99]

First Look – Green Lantern: The Animated Series

  • Title: Green Lantern: The Animated Series
  • tv.com: link

Cartoon Network has released the first teaser for Green Lantern: The Animated Series. I have to admit to a mixed reaction for this first sneak peek. On one hand they’ve kept the classic look of GL (unlike Green Lantern: First Flight and Green Lantern: Emerald Knights) which I’m all in favor for. But on the other hand I’m much more a fan of old school animation than this streamlined CGI style (which always looks cheap to me).
