Agatha Christie‘s The Mirror Crack’d from Side to Side is a bizarre choice for an adaptation, a Miss Marple mystery that limits the amount of time you can feature the detective, and The Mirror Crack’d is an equally head-scratching film in hiding our leading lady even more than the original novel did making Marple a supporting character in her own mystery.

Writer/director Bart Layton‘s adaptation of Don Winslow‘s novella offers a mix between a heist film and a drama featuring the interconnected lives of strangers who converge. Our characters include our noble and uncatchable thief (Chris Hemsworth), the girl (Monica Barbaro) he begins dating after she literally crashes into him, a good cop (Mark Ruffalo) on the outs with his own department for following evidence rather than towing the company line, a middle-aged insurance agent (Halle Berry) passed over for another raise, and a second, more reckless, thief (Barry Keoghan) looking to steal a big score from Hemsworth’s character.

Murder Mystery Monday takes us back to the most famous mystery writer of Cabot Cove. “Tough Guys Don’t Die” introduced hardboiled private detective Harry McGraw (Jerry Orbach) as the partner of the PI Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury) hired to look into an unsolved case. Although the pair don’t initially hit it off (with Harry unnecessarily breaking into her house and, like so many others, offering Jessica advice to stay out of a real criminal investigations), eventually McGraw accepts Jessica’s help and would become a recurring character on the show and even earn his own (short-lived) spin-off.

The Beekeeper fits right in among the litany of action flicks centered around a former highly-skilled killer living a normal life who is woken out of his slumber for revenge. From First Blood to John Wick, it’s a well-tread road. Jason Statham stars as Adam Clay, a retired elite assassin (known as a Beekeeper) living off the grid keeping bees on a farm owned by a kind old woman (Phylicia Rashad). However, when she’s targeted by a phishing scam that destroys her life, Clay comes out of retirement for revenge.
