The two-issue story set in 1990 takes Hellboy and Abe to a small coastal town where a recent infestation of ghosts from the sea has taken over the area and also captured a young B.P.R.D. exorcist sent in earlier to determine the scope of the situation who disappeared within the dense mist. The twist of the story comes in the revelation of why the ghosts invaded the town, not to steal it for themselves but an attempt to hide from an even larger threat pursuing them across the seas.

An adaptation of the 1964 play (which was inspired by the myth of The Flying Dutchman), director Andre Gaines‘ The Dutchman is social commentary wrapped up in a messy metaphysical metaphor that, while it has something to say on both the subject of being a successful Black man in America and on marital infidelity and temptation, is far more opaque than it should be except, perhaps, in Clay’s long monologues that are meant to offer cultural critique to the audience more than the film’s antagonist.

I enjoy amnesiac stories, whether the character is missing just a day or their entire lives, and watching the process of them solving the mystery of who they are (ending in the obvious question of whether, through that process, they are still the same person). I’m also a sucker for both sci-fi and Eiza González who is certainly the highlight cast in the central role of a space explorer waking up on an alien planet with all of the other crew dead and no idea what happened.
