Darth Vader is added to the list of comic characters getting his own anthology series in black and white (often with a bit of red thrown in). Darth Vader: Black, White & Red #1 offers three separate tales, one of which apparently will continue through four issues (diverging from the usual format of this kind of comic series). It’s not the strongest group of stories, but there is something here for big Vader fans.

Lady Macbeth

Only loosely based on Nikolai Leskov’s novella, 2016’s Lady Macbeth is primarily notable for the lead performance of Florence Pugh as a younger wife stuck in a marriage of convivence to a disinterested older man (Paul Hilton) growing more and more isolated in rural Northumberland before beginning an affair with one of her husband’s servants (Cosmo Jarvis). The film from director William Oldroyd takes some patience as, to highlight the banality of her life, nothing happens for the first 20 minutes of the film. We don’t know who Katherine was before her marriage and whether circumstances drove her to the cruelty on display or simply allowed that cruelty to fester and eventually lash out.

Things get back to normal on The Blacklist with a case of the week as Reddington (James Spader) sends the team off a man who is known to be able to smuggle anything into prisons. In a twist, the man the FBI is working for spent 25 years in prison for a crime that Harold (Harry Lennix) helped send to prison as one of the man’s jurors. “The Postman” has the feel of a script that had been kicking around the writer’s room for awhile and, despite still not being quite ready, got greenlit in the show’s final season.
