Batman: The Adventures Continue Season Two #4

“The Muscle” introduces a new mercenary to Gotham City. The Muscle arrives in Gotham Harbor, silencing a witness and destroying a yacht for his latest client, before setting his sights on his next target: Detective Renee Montoya.

The first attempt from a rooftop sniper’s perch is broken up by the timely arrival of Detective Harvey Bullock. And Bruce Wayne manages to thwart the second attempt after a fundraiser, earning him an overnight hospital stay for his trouble. 

Batman: The Adventures Continue Season Two #4 offers an enjoyable single-issue tale featuring a mysterious new villain and some terrific artwork by Jordan Gibson whose style meshes wonderfully with that of the show and knows just how to use shadow to frame the characters.

ZoomThrowback Tuesday takes us back to the box office and critical failure of 2006’s super-hero comedy Zoom. The film stars Tim Allen as a former teen super-hero brought back to the secret government program 30 years later to help train a new generation of heroes (Michael Cassidy, Kate Mara, Spencer Breslin, and Ryan Whitney). As with most of these team hero tales, about half of the powers turn out to be useful while the rest are used mainly for comic relief (although rarely for big laughs).

The supporting cast is made up of over-the-top characters in charge of the program played by the likes of Courteney Cox, Chevy Chase, and Rip Torn. Unaware of the looming threat (which turns out to be his long lost brother, played by Kevin Zegers, driven insane by government testing), and resenting being drafted into service against his will, Allen is stuck is schmuck mode for the first-half of the film.

We Are Lady Parts - Represent / Sparta

The final two episodes of the first, and perhaps only, season of the witty and heartfelt We Are Lady Parts revolve around the release and backlash of social media influencer Zarina’s (Sofia Barclay) article about the band that no only outs Amina (Anjana Vasan) to her friends but also paints the group as anti-Muslim radicals leading to a crushing wave of social media hate landing on the band. The fact that article hits on an already emotional day for Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey) leads to the implosion of the band, Amina returning to her pre-Lady Parts life, and leaving Momtaz (Lucie Shorthouse) to pick up the pieces and try to put the band back together.

Red Sonja: Black, White, Red #3 offers three more separate tales of Red Sonja in black and white… and red. The third issue of the anthology is notable for offering not one but two separate tales without any dialogue.

The only tale with dialogue, “Small Tales,” is notable for having a character that won’t shut-up when Sonja comes across a young girl who manages to momentarily snare Sonja in a trap. Our heroine helps the young girl home, only to discover she is not the orphan she claimed to be but a runaway who hoped to meet her hero.

“Dawn of a Crimson Day” from Gail Simone offers snapshots across Sonja’s timeline, beautifully rendered by Walter Geovani, giving us Sonja as a child and a distant future featuring a one-eyed She-Devil with a Sword continuing her adventures.
