Throwback Tuesday takes us back 50 years to the Disney adaptation of Alexander H. Key’s novel. The film, which whitewashes the protagonists and tones down the violence for a younger audience, is an odd tale of two orphans (Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann) with paranormal powers who are adopted by rich industrialist Aristotle Bolt (Ray Milland) obsessed with the subject. Bolt’s interest in them causes the pair to flee to a spot known for bizarre phenomena called Witch Mountain. Eventually revealed to be extraterrestrial witches, the two kids are reunited with their people at the end of the film flying back into space.

The Fantastic Four

  • Title: The Fantastic Four (1994)

After holding onto the movie rights for nearly a decade, and with the clock ticking down, German producer Bernd Eichinger reached to Roger Corman to produce a super-hero film on the cheap for only $1,000,000. With only a month of shooting, but several months of post-production, the film seemed to be ready for Labor Day 1993, until it wasn’t. Parties disagree whether the film was ever meant to see the light of day, or simply as leverage to keep the rights in Eichinger’s hands, but either way the film was pulled and never release theatrically. And so the stories began about The Fantastic Four movie that never was. And yet, speaking before Fantastic Four: The First Steps hits theaters, one could make a case that it’s better, or at least certainly not worse, than any of the FF films that did get released over the next 30 years.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

  • Title: I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025)

Other than the basic concept, and a few minor details, I have no strong memory of 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer which, although is credited for helping revive the slasher genre following closely on the heels of the much more successful Scream, was ultimately a rather forgettable example of the genre. Skip ahead nearly 30 years and you’ve got a new version of the film which offers a similar set up of a car accident caused by a group of friends (Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, and Sarah Pidgeon) who make a pact to cover it up rather than face the consequences of their actions. One year later, however, someone with a hook (and also knives and a speargun) begins targeting them and their loved ones. Are they smart enough to find the killer before they are all killed? Probably not as these aren’t exactly the smartest crop of victims to be targeted by a killer in a slasher flick.

Ironheart – We in Danger, Girl / Bad Magic

  • Title: Ironheart – We in Danger, Girl / Bad Magic

“We in Danger, Girl” and “Bad Magic” are where Riri Williams‘ (Dominique Thorne) life takes a turn. More interested in investigating the Hood‘s (Anthony Ramos) than doing her part in the next heist, for no real reason other than curiosity, Riri nearly botches another robbery and her actions not only cause to be killed (Manny Montana) but also throw the life of Joe (Alden Ehrenreich), who it turns out isn’t really Joe, into chaos allowing the Hood to recruit him as well. The two episode arc is all about bad decisions and regret and Riri creating a number of enemies who now want her dead. Of course what this means is that Riri doesn’t get to make a hero turn but will be forced into becoming on due the fallout of her own actions.  That’s not the most intriguing hero’s journey.
